| A landmark in cinema history, Roberto Rossellini's depiction of Italian life under German occupation was shot under primitive conditions in Rome with a largely nonprofessional cast just weeks after the Nazis departed. Anna Magnani and Aldo Fabrizi memorably portray the wife of a man arrested for ties to the resistance and a priest called upon to smuggle money to the guerillas.
