A landmark in cinema history, Roberto Rossellini's depiction of Italian life under German occupation was shot under primitive conditions in Rome with a largely nonprofessional cast just weeks after the Nazis departed. Anna Magnani and Aldo Fabrizi memorably portray the wife of a man arrested for ties to the resistance and a priest called upon to smuggle money to the guerillas. The first neorealist feature to be widely seen around the world, OPEN CITY was succinctly described by Rossellini as "a film about fear, the fear felt by all of us."
