9. The One From High School

He’s the gay friend who wasn’t so gay in high school. He was just your good friend in the closet, until he went to college and went full-blown out and proud. It’s fun to reminisce with this guy--the time you had a crush on him, the secret crush you both harbored for the same jock or teacher, and all the times he secretly hooked up with his first boyfriend. The nostalgic dish is always the best part, and it’s great to keep in touch with somebody who knew you when you had braces.

8. The Political One

You gotta keep up with the LGBTQ issues if you want to be an informed citizen and an informed supporter of the cause. This guy knows how to reach your Senator, so you can urge them to do the right thing. This guy knows the marriage and civil union laws for every state, what every politician says about every issue, and he’s ready to catch you up on it. Listen to him, he’s the kind of guy that will boost your intellectual savvy, and will make you a more informed voter.

7. The Party Boy

He knows all the happening clubs. He knows how to get into those clubs. He’s ready to go to said clubs, introduce you to people, stay out till 4am dancing to David Guetta and gets bottle service sans the pricetag. When you need a real night to just let go, this is the guy you want on your arm. You might not remember the night too well, and you might wake up with 5 am diner food on your face and your Spanxx still on, but it’ll be a night worth having. Every once and a while, at least.

6. The One With The Other Great Girlfriends

I’ve made some great life friends through my gay buddies. They’ve got some stellar taste in ladies (I mean, they’re friends with ME), so chances are their other lady friends are pretty great, too. Organize a brunch or Friday night where you can all meet and mingle, and start adding other girls to your phone whenever you need a night of boy hunting out with a bunch of girlfriends. I mean, your gay friend needs a night off from your single lady problems, after all!

5. The One With The Hot Straight Friends

Whether it be his brothers, his old fraternity buddies, or his coworkers, you gotta find the gay guy with some attractive looking heterosexual friends. Chances are, he’ll love to play matchmaker, or at least set up a meeting at some bar where you can get your flirt on. I know a number of my friends have made out or dated a guy because he was friends with their GBF, and it’s about time you get a piece of that action. Stalk his Facebook or just ask him. Believe me, his friends’ll be into it too--they’re counting on him to have some hot straight girlffriends too, after all.

4. The One With The Fashion Sense

There’s always one--the guy who either has a job in fashion who can get you free swag or the one who’s always willing to go to SOHO with you to advise on these weird, winter trends. Not only will you get to spend the day dressing him up in all the things you wish your boyfriend would wear (bowties are ADORABLE), but he’s patient enough to give you advice on how to dress you, too. Yeah, he reads Vogue. Yes, you look amazing in that statement necklace.

3. The Loud and Proud

The proudest gay--the one that goes to the parades and the protests, tells everybody they are ‘here and queer’ and has a an equal sign tattooed on his forearm. Let me tell you something, he’s the kind of friend you want to have on your side. He’s the one who will a) stick up for you whenever you’re being picked on, because he’s one brave soul who believes in the beauty of everybody and b) he’s the most confident kid you’ll be blessed to know. Take a note from him- being exactly who you are and embracing it is one of the hardest things you can do to have a wonderful life. Do yourself a favor and try to emulate him, too.

2. The One About To Come Out

Coming out of the closet is no easy feat--and as the supportive person I’m sure you are, this is the time you really role up your sleeves and play the ‘good friend’ card. Let them know that no matter what, they’re not alone. Let them know you’ll always love them no matter what, that you’ll be there to listen to any hopes and fears they may have…and most of all, listen. Be a pal. Open your ears to a friend in one of the hardest times of their lives. They won’t forget it, and neither will you.

1. The One in the Relationship

Nothing like your GBF finding another GBF to share his life with--seeing a friend happy is a bonus, but making another gay best friend is an added bonus. I’ve spent many a night curling up with the three of them, watching television, eating popcorn and getting some pretty solid dating advice. The more the merrier, I say!
