9. UNDEAD SPIRITS AT ENCHANTED ROCK, TEXAS

So many places can be looked at as Indian spiritual sites, that it makes us want to do a whole other list. We think of Glacier, The Badlands, Hopewell mounds, Shiprock.

But we want to keep this list a bit paranormal, so we're going to go with Texas' Enchanted Rock, which isn't so much peaceful and meditative and religious as it is scary.

Long-believed to be a site of massacres, suicides, and human sacrifices, this mound of pink stone is thought to turn people who sleep upon it invisible, cause bad things to happen to those who scale it with bad intent, and to be teeming with the undead spirits of warriors massacred there by a rival tribe.

8. INFAMOUS GHOSTS IN HOLLYWOOD

For all its fake, publicity-seeking versions of spirituality and occultism, Hollywood and its environs are probably a strange entry here. Still, paranormal tourism in LA is robust as ever.

Ghosts, famous and not, wander the halls of every hotel, people stream through graveyards searching for names they recognize, and Scientologists haunt every street corner.

Even if you find the place sterile and empty, chasing ghosts here is worth it for the nice weather and pretty living people.

7. CHACO CANYON, HOME OF THE PUEBLOS

A number of sites in the southwest are known to have once been the homes of disappeared peoples—The Pueblos and the Anasazi being the most well-known.

Chaco Canyon, once the home of a huge Puelbo civilization, is more than only a haunting glimpse into the past. Large sun-measuring stone structures and precisely aligned buildings and streets tell a tale of a society with very advanced astronomical and spiritual practices, while its harsh environs and utter remoteness leave only mysteries as to why anybody would want to live there.

6. EVIL SPIRITS AT MOUNT KATAHDIN, MAINE

Even cranky Henry Thoreau struggled for the correct words to describe the wild, windy, foggy weirdness of Maine's highest peak, Katahdin.

Revered and avoided by local Indians who consider Katahdin to be the home of the evil deity Pamola—an enormous and wrathful eagle-beast with nothing nice to say— one single trail has claimed about 20 hikers since the 60s.

5. ALIENS IN SEDONA, ARIZONA

It isn't arbitrary that Sedona, Arizona became a New-Age mecca. A number of very strong energy vortexes are dotted throughout the town's environs, twisting junipers and putting a little extra sparkle in your crystal.

Combine that with the belief that the area is an inter-dimensional portal in regular use by a specific race of aliens, and you can understand why the weirdos flock here.

Salem might be your go-to witch haven, and we agree that its townspeople have really decked the place out in supernatural, halloweeny garb.

3. JERSEY DEVIL IN THE PINE BARRENS

The Pine Barrens of New Jersey, almost a million acres of sparsely-populated, sandy woodland in a state people don't usually associate with wilderness, is thought of as the original habitat of the Jersey Devil.

But that horse-like, wailing creature isn't the only weird thing about those woods. Ghost towns, abandoned factories, bogs, and A LOT of people who would rather have nothing to do with civilization pervade the landscape. It doesn't take a paranormal expert to know those things come with ghosts.

Northern California's Mount Shasta has attracted religious and spiritual groups to it for thousands of years, ever since various local native people believed it to be the center of creation.

In less-ancient times, Shasta was reputed to be the refuge of the Lemurians, people who fled the sinking continent of Atlantis. These days, the peak is a beacon for Indians, Buddhists, New Agey healer/chanter types, Rosicrusians, off-the-gridders, UFO-watchers, and Skell, a sky-descended spirit chief. And skiers.

1. ELVIS' GHOST IN GRACELAND

Graceland is both our modern number one and our dark horse contender for future awe.

It's our number one because it is so completely American, so modern, and so weird in its treatment of the paranormal not as something sacred but as a given. At Graceland, there is no doubt Elvis has not left the building.

It's our dark horse contender because some day in the future, when teams of archaeologists unearth what they will surely take to be some kind of mysterious temple, they are going to be so psyched.
