10. Bobcat Bite – Green Chile Cheeseburger (Santa Fe)

In Santa Fe we visited Bobcat Bite, a little pink adobe building along the historic Old Las Vegas Highway. Bobcat Bite used to be home to a trading post and gun shop, but now it’s the home of the famous and award-winning Green Chile Cheeseburger. We both ordered this burger to see if it was truly worth all the hype. After the first bite, we both agreed that it was well worth the praise. It’s a simple burger—meat, green chile, cheese, and bread—but it has extraordinary taste. The meat is so fresh and juicy. After being in America for 15 years, Ludo said it was the best burger he’s ever had. I’d have to agree.

9. Biker Jim’s – Elk Jalapeno Cheddar Brat (Denver)

A big priority for Ludo is to locally source the food he cooks. You might think it would be hard to do that if you run a hot dog stand, but Jim Pittenger, aka Biker Jim, has found a way to do it. Our favorite dog from his stand (and the biggest seller on the cart), the Elk Jalapeno Cheddar Brat, uses elk raised from local reserves in Colorado. The elk meat is then diced with jalapenos and cheddar cheese to make a brat that’s just spicy enough. Coupled with Cream Cheese & Caramelized Onions to curb the spiciness, this delivers a unique combination of flavors that seems just right.

8. Queen G's - Boiled Oysters (Mobile)

Like many of our LudoBites partners, Carolyn Mathers has taken over a restaurant started by her parents and is making it her own. When we stopped by Queen G’s for lunch, Ludo ordered both styles of Carolyn’s oysters—Fried and Boiled. Queen G’s is known for their fried oysters (acclaimed as some of the best fried oysters in Mobile), so do try them when you visit. However, don’t pass up the boiled oysters, too. The boiled oysters are served in a very tasty broth. Ludo liked them so much he declared at the table that he would steal the recipe!

7. Felix's - Almondie Grouper (Mobile)

At Felix’s Fish Camp Grill, the place where everything was overshadowed by Ludo’s fascination with the “po-boy” sandwich, you really must not overlook their Almondine Grouper. This item isn’t exactly on the menu, but can be crafted based on the menu options. Ludo ordered the fresh catch of the day and added the Almondine topping, thus creating a very tasty dish.

6. Pork BBQ - Allen & Sons (Raleigh)

Allen & Sons is a small BBQ joint in the middle of nowhere, well on the outskirts of Chapel Hill, NC. There, Keith Allen specializes in serving up his version of vinegar-based North Carolina Barbeque. This style of barbeque pork was like nothing we’d ever had. It had a nice smoky flavor, but not too spicy. You really must appreciate this meal for all the work that goes into making it. Keith works in the middle of the night, cooking the pork shoulder for 12 hours! It might be a jaunt out of the way to find Allen & Sons Pit Cooked Bar-B-Q, but it’s well worth trip.

5. Black Cat Bistro - everything we ate!!! (Boulder)

During our culinary adventure through the Denver area, we ventured up to Boulder to Eric Skokan’s Black Cat Bistro. Eric has a very cool concept and operation going on in Boulder. Black Cat Bistro has a companion organic farm on the outskirts of Boulder where Eric raises all the produce he serves in the restaurant. When you eat at his restaurant, everything on your plate comes from his farm. His vegetables are so fresh and taste great. Ludo gave me trouble because I’m normally not a fan of vegetables, but at Black Cat I cleaned my plate! Order anything on this menu. You can’t go wrong!

4. Tecolote Cafe - Huevos Yucatecos with Posole (Santa Fe)

We made our first stop in Santa Fe at Tecolote Café and liked the place so much we partnered with Katie Adkins and her restaurant for LudoBites Santa Fe. If you go there for breakfast, we recommend the Huevos Yucatecos. It’s a corn tortilla layered with black beans, two eggs any style, green chile, Swiss and feta cheese, pico de gallo, and surrounded with fried bananas. You also get a choice of beans, posole or potatoes. I had my Huevos Yucatecos with posole. Don’t hesitate over the fried bananas—they really make the dish! So, if you happen upon Tecolote Café in Santa Fe and want to stop in for breakfast, order the Huevos Yucatecos, but don’t expect to be served toast!

3. Big Mama's - Oven Fried Chicken (Omaha)

Our LudoBites Omaha partner, Patricia “Big Mama” Barron does a lot of things well. One is giving back to her community; another is cooking Fried Chicken. Big Mama gives a unique twist to cooking Fried Chicken—she cooks it in an oven. The oven fried chicken is seasoned with Big Mama’s own rub, marinated in buttermilk and dusted with flour and oven fried to golden brown perfection. The Oven Fried Chicken is a fan favorite on the menu and we believe that it’s pretty much the best fried chicken around.

2. Wee-Man's Chronic Tacos - Fish and Potato Tacos (Redondo Beach)

Wee-Man, whom you might recognize from Jackass, owns a franchise store of the Chronic Tacos restaurant in Redondo Beach, CA. The name of the place pulled us in and we were happily surprised with the quality of the experience. Chronic Taco’s is a fast casual restaurant that does it right. They have a great ambience with a young and hip vibe that’s perfect for its beachside setting. Our favorite tacos, the fish taco and the potato taco, came together to inspire the Brandade Taco Ludo made for LudoBites Redondo Beach. If Ludo were to grade Chronic Tacos he’d give it three F’s –Fast, Fresh and F#&king Good!

1. Lovely Confections – Bees Knees Cupcakes (Denver)

This cute little cupcake shop in Denver specializes in crafting up award winning cupcakes from all-natural, organic and locally sourced ingredients. Off her menu of many creative combinations, Ludo and I liked the Bees Knees—a Lavendar Cupcake with Honey and Lemon Buttercream. Ludo admires Owner Porche Lovely as a baker. She has developed some great recipes, using her creativity to mix together different flavors to create a truly unique cupcake eating experience.
