Guy Bourdin (1928-91) is one of those rare fashion photographers who straddled the line between art and commerce, ultimately leaving his mark in both worlds. Bourdin got an unusual start, receiving his first formal photographic training while serving in the military in Senegal in the late 40s. A few years later, when he came back to Paris, his photographs were exhibited in a show for which Man Ray wrote the catalogue's introduction - a helluva start for a newbie. He was quickly whisked away to French Vogue, where his love of Man Ray's surrealism made a marked impact on his fashion editorials.

Fashion Week has come and gone from NYC never again returning to the tents of Bryant Park. And while most New Yorkers have had their share of fashion for a bit I'd be remiss not to post here this slide show Vogue ran before the hoopla began. It highlights designer mood boards and inspiration walls. I find it fascinating to have a peek into the the creative process. And I also have had fun taking the mood board image and comparing it to the actual collections that were shown. The image above is from Jason Wu. He wrote “My fall 2010 collection is inspired by Irving Penn, by both his work and personal style. I applied the grainy textures of his photo negatives to intricately woven and printed fabrics and paired them with a slouchy menswear silhouette he often favored.”

As artists continue to draw inspiration from childhood fears and fairy tales, it comes as no surprise that classic stories like Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (more commonly known as Alice in Wonderland) are being tapped. Coming up on the 2010 film lineup is Tim Burton's much anticipated ALICE IN WONDERLAND with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter (who else?), Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. But Burton is hardly the first to put a unique spin on Carroll's tale. With the first official photographs of WONDERLAND released last week, photographer-extraordinaire Annie Leibovitz's editorial for Vogue US December 2003 have "resurfaced," thanks to the efforts of bloggers everywhere.
