As the post-Halloween haze lifts, lets take a moment to reflect back on some of the more imaginative, creative, and/or topical costumes from around the country that reverberated around the Internet and blogosphere this week. My favorite this year fell on the surreal artsy side of things. Artist Eric Testroete built a “papercraft self-portrait,” which reminds me of those easter egg modes in video games that turns all the characters heads into “big heads.” More after the jump.
An impressive meticulously detailed large map measuring 6 feet x 8 feet of New York City cut out of paper by hand. It’s separated into four panels each representing the main boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens), except for the Rodney Dangerfield of the boroughs: sorry, Staten Island. Along with a Paris version, this unique one of a kind map is available at the popular DIY website Etsy.
“World Series,” Brian Dettmer’s take on the encyclopedia
Of the artists profiled in Gestalten’s recent release Papercraft, Brian Dettmer steals the show. All the artists are doing interesting things with paper, but Dettmer is on another level altogether. More than an artist who works with paper, Dettmer is a book sculptor, or maybe book surgeon is more accurate. He’s so meticulous in his execution, it’s more like he’s performing a book autopsy than working as an artist in a studio.
“Pressed, Stained, Slashed, Folded” was the name of the MoMA exhibit this past March that focused on works made with paper as the main ingredient. As someone who loves not only works on paper, but works that showcase its abilities as a material, I was extremely disappointed. As the title indicates, it seems they could think of only four things to do with paper. Luckily, Gestalten has come to the rescue with Papercraft, a big, beautiful book showcasing not only cute, small things, like the little paper fruits and vegetables on the cover, but also great big complicated works of paper, even animation.
As a follow up, Gestalten is releasing a series paper model kits from London-based design studio, PostlerFerguson. The Uzi, MP5, M4A8 and hand grenade are due out soon.
BBDO Mexico created this video concept of a world where all material objects are made from notebook paper sketched with a blue ballpoint pen. What paperless world? Very neat concept, but with all that paper flying around it doesn’t seem to be very green!
An impressive animated short mixing cut-paper craft and 2D illustration depicting the journey of an apple seed after an apple is consumed. It really is a lot more interesting than it may sound.
