The Sundance Film Festival is known as a haven for indie filmmakers, but over its history it's also been a very welcoming venue for indie-minded TV-makers as well. A surprising number of films spun off from television shows have premiered in Park City over the years, from WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER (from the creators of The State) to RUN RONNIE RUN (from the creators of Mr. Show) to STRANGERS WITH CANDY (from the creators of either Temptation Island or Strangers With Candy, I forget.). To that great tradition, we now add TIM AND ERIC'S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE, written and directed by Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, and made in the style of their beloved cult Adult Swim series, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! If you're not familiar with Tim and Eric, I'm not inserting superlatives into the title; that's the name of the show. And if you're not familiar with Tim and Eric at this point, you probably don't need to rush out to see their BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE, as word out of Park City indicates it's largely a for-die-hard-fans-only affair.

It's pretty much the weekend, one of three remaining August weekends before we hit Labor Day and move into Fall, I might add, so it's time to start wrapping up our summer movie to-see lists and look ahead at what's coming next. Out of the latest batch of recently released trailers I noticed a trend towards parenting movies, and while these three films all involve adults raising children, they couldn't be less alike.

2011 marks the 20th anniversary of Woody Allen's SHADOWS AND FOG, meaning, among other things, that the prolific filmmaker has made 20 films since (actually, he's made 21, but who's counting?). In 1989 Allen made the much-loved CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, followed by the slightly less loved ALICE, and then SHADOWS AND FOG, which was, unfortunately, even less of a hit amongst audiences. The early 90s New York Times film critic Vincent Canby actually ended his review with a ridiculous "note of caution: SHADOWS AND FOG operates on its own wavelength. It is different. It should not be anticipated in the manner of other Allen films."

Miguel Arteta’s CEDAR RAPIDS, which premiered Sunday night at the Sundance Film Festival, is garnering positive, if not rapturous, reviews. General consensus: The insurance-industry fish-out-of-water comedy, which stars Ed Helms, John C. Reilly, Anne Heche and Isiah Whitlock Jr., is slight, but sturdy, sweet and funny, with a lot of heart. A sampling of responses: [...]

Molly (Marisa Tomei) meets John (John C. Reilly) when she stumbles upon him peeing in the backyard at a party. She's more amused than shocked, adding that she herself was about to squat in the bushes for a pee, and so their charmingly awkward, middle-aged romance begins. Neither Molly nor John have been in a relationship since their respective divorces; John's was 7 years ago with ex-wife Jamie (Catherine Keener) and Molly hasn't seen anyone since her first husband split when she gave birth to their son, Cyrus, who's now 21 and living at home.
