The first Earth Day in 1970 centered on political activism. In recent years, the event often mirrors something closer to a combination of a state fair and a trade show. Nothing wrong with that: these events likely bring out a much more diverse mix of people than the earliest gatherings. At the same time, current Earth Day celebrations tend to focus on the celebration... even if directly connecting with the natural world gets moved down the list of priorities.

Yesterday was Earth Day and the blogosphere was abuzz with all the handy, dandy and most often meaningless catchphrases that abound in our newly environmentally conscious world (see, I just dropped one myself). Keep in mind that however good Earth Day is at making more people more aware of their environment (I saw a homeless man use one of his own plastic bags at a deli counter), it was invented by an ad man, just like Valentine's Day and Secretary's Day (now Administrative Assistant's Day). So if you want to join in the fun of hyphenating your words with eco- and green- take a minute to learn what it really means.

Lesson 1: Architecture. The AIA (American Institute of Architecture) recently announced the Top Ten Green Buildings of 2010. But before we take a look at the winners, let's go over the criteria:

While the list of Hollywood environmentalists continues to grow, few have been involved in the movement longer or more consistently than Sundance founder Robert Redford. As such, NRDC's On Earth chose to publish an interview with Redford late last week in which he reflects on the first Earth Day forty years ago, his own environmental awakenings, and how the movement to protect and conserve our natural resources has developed, changed, and even taken some detours since 1970.
