I always thought my constant relationships with gay men were completely normal. Growing up in a liberal section of Westchester, New York, I did a lot of theater (I played a prostitute twice in high school, which I’m sure pleased my parents endlessly). I watched my guy friends become my gay friends as they started to slowly come out of closets and admit to their worlds that they were homosexual. It was simply what happened, and I didn’t pay much attention to it. Why? Because I was worried about my own sexuality, specifically my own lack of sexuality while I tried to get any guy to want to kiss my slobbery, brace-filled face.

Redford & the NRDC to demonstrate against Big Oil in D.C.

Before President Obama entered office he promised to stand up to big oil. Now it’s up to him and his administration – not Congress – to stick to his promise and stop the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline once and for all. The pipeline will increase our dependence on foreign oil, create more pollution and threaten our land, water and climate. Full scale paper Mustang

Hosfelt Gallery in New York recently hosted Jonathan Brand’s exhibition “One Piece at a Time.” The undeniable star of the show was the Brooklyn-based artist’s full scale replica of a 1969 Ford Mustang constructed entirely from paper. As the exhibit’s title suggests (it was inspired by the Johnny Cash song of the same name), Brand recreated everything about the iconic American muscle car by hand, “right down to the nuts and bolts, displaying it as the individual collected parts, rather than as a single object.” The papercraft nature gives the installation an almost Americana-kitsch quality that appeals broadly, which is fitting, considering the role of the Ford Mustang in the construction of the modern American myth of muscle and might.
