Dubious product of the week: Woody Wipes
“I think you guys would love Woody Wipes,” went the email we received this week. “We are helping women around the U.S combat musty balls.” Um, yeah. We think that possibly the only thing creepier than seeing a box of baby wipes (adorned with a chubby Gerber baby face) next to a guy’s self-love lube in his nightstand, would be to see a box of Woody Wipes, adorned with a cartoon dude clutching a wipe and giving a self-satisfied thumbs up. Is there a phrase less sexy in the English language than “Woody Wipe”?!

A 31-year-old Israeli “journalist, musician and Internet buff” Noy Alooshe autotuned embattled Libyan leader Muammar el-Qaddafi’s recent crazed televised speech and set it to an electro-dance beat. The rather catchy song and video “Zenga Zenga Song” has since gone quickly viral (over 1.5MM YouTube views) and provided a 21st century revolutionary version of the Numa [...]

RABBIT HOLE is John Cameron Mitchell’s new film starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as Becca and Howie, grieving parents who just want to stop the ache. Have you seen it? There may be someone in your life who says to you, “There is no way in hell that I’ll see that sad sad sad sad movie.” (Someone said that to me.) But I say, “Hey, in your movies, you got big you got little. You’ve got amusement park rides – most big budget movies today — and you’ve got Sofia Coppola. Can’t you have sad too, with all the happy out there?” What’s more, I like the way in which this film is so simple. And I don’t mean basic.

I hate that I can’t find out who credit goes to for these clever photoshops of popular cartoon characters interjected into famous paintings. My favorite is the above pun of Winslow Homer’s oil painting “The Fog Warning” (1885). If anyone knows who is responsible for this awesomeness, let me know!

Network’s “Poptimist” Audience is Highly Engaged in Driving New Trends in Culture
New York, March 1, 2011 – On the heels of the success of its original unscripted series “Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys,” and its first ever Golden Globe win for the mini-series “Carlos,” Sundance Channel is doubling its original programming hours in 2011 with a slate of seven new and returning series and two non-fiction series in active development. Included on the 2011 slate is a second season of the social media hit “Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys.”
The slate signals a new direction for the network, combining substance with fun to create a fresh kind of forward-looking non-fiction programming for its ”poptimist” audience. The lineup was announced today at an upfront event by Sundance Channel General Manager and EVP Sarah Barnett.

Read More »Barbie, the architect
Every year Mattel hosts the “I Can Be” contest, in which various jobs befitting Barbie’s perky personality and skill set (I’ll bet she at least knows Quicken) are submitted online. Once the winning profession is chosen, Mattel dutifully releases a new Barbie accessorized with the tools of her trade . Ever since 2002 a group of architects and librarians have been campaigning for Mattel to add architect to Barbie’s long roster of other jobs, which include baby photographer, police officer, nurse, race car driver, astronaut and president of the United States. Architect actually won out in 2002, but Mattel refused to make the doll and a fierce battle has ensued ever since.

We greenies just love our reusable water bottles… with good reason: bottled water provides little benefit at a high price, and creates a ton of waste (only 20% of which gets recycled). Refilling those bottles on the go can be a challenge, though. Sure, you can use a water fountain, but they’re designed for direct drinking… so refilling a bottle can be a slow process.
The Ecology Club and Office of Sustainability at the University of Georgia have addressed this problem head on with the installation of three water bottle filling stations in the Odum School of Ecology building.

I love this photo of Weegee. It was a revelation when I first came across Weegee (Arthur Fellig) when there was an exhibition of his photography at Brown University’s David Winton Bell Gallery. It may not be news to any of you ladies out there who’ve enjoyed the thrill of a no-strings-attached hook-up, but for those who buy into the evo-psych pop notion that women are only interested in high-status resource providers rather than hotties (i.e. the opposite of men’s supposed eternal motivations) there’s a study published in [...]
