Not Waving But Drowning

When I sublet my apartment in the West Village last year to a woman wearing plastic boots and leopard prints, I thought nothing of it. New York is full of eccentrics. They’re par for the course.

She called herself The Countess. I thought, don’t we all? She paid her rent on time and we chatted here and there and then she asked me to come see her perform at the Norwood Club, a private club catering to artistic professionals. She finished the show with the above record, “Not Waving But Drowning,” singing with the video clip above.

It’s genius. More people need to hear it. And luckily it’s surfaced on YouTube. Someone get her a record deal. Please.
