Self High Five Machine

Currently exhibiting at Chashama in New York through July 15 is Turkish-born, New York artist Deniz Ozuygur’s “Self High Five Machine” which subverts the artist’s memories of grade-school “acceptance and popularity” which was embodied by the high-five among classmates.

Having been on the wrong end of too many “missed it!” and “too slow! high fives, the artist takes the matter into her own hands (ha!).

Using two rubber casts of her right arm, Ozuygur attempts her own D.I.Y solution. One arm remains static as the other is attached to a motor. The motor rotates at a speed of only one rotation per minute. This cinematic slow-motion effect builds suspense and excitement in the audience.

If you can’t make it to the gallery, here’s a YouTube video of her high five installation in (slow) action. She should create next a Self Fist Bump Machine, obviously.
