My dad is a wonderful person and was a good father, but what he taught me about sex really took some reprogramming via therapy when I reached adulthood. The only thing he ever said to me on the subject was “Some day some boy is going to try to put his hands down your pants, and you’d better not let him.” I was sufficiently curious so as not to take it literally to heart, but once the curiosity wore off and I married, I found myself pushing my husband(s) (married 2X) away. Turns out I had bought into the idea of men as sexual predators, something attributable both to my Dad’s warning and to the sex-negative messaging coming from the culture around me. So even though I was never sexually abused, I acted a lot like someone who was. Must also remember the time that programming occurred, i.e. the early 1960s in east Tennessee, the buckle of the Bible belt. My messaging to my daughter was much more positive.
