Making an unexpected appearance on my summer playlist is gospel sensation Naomi Shelton, whose latest album What Have You Done My Brother? (out today on Daptone Records) looks as if it could have come out 40 years ago. The sound, too, is a familiar (in a good way) blend of organ, strong lead vocals and classic doo wop backup. But there’s also blues, R&B and honky tonk. In fact, Shelton is backed by former James Brown bassist Fred Thomas at Fat Cat, the West Village jazz haunt where she performs every Friday night.
There’s still time to buy tickets to her CD release party at Joes’ Pub tomorrow night.
