Are cocoa beans the sweet energy alternative of the future? That’s what The Public Service of New Hampshire is hoping to discover through a new experiment with scraps of beans from chocolatier Lindt USA. A recent test burn at a new Hampshire power plant was nearly two years in the making. The experiment combined one part cocoa bean and thirty-three parts coal in a boiler to produce electricity at the plant. Lindt will begin roasting its own beans in a US facility in January 2010 and will then send excess cocoa shells to the New Hampshire power plant for continued energy experimentation.
