United States Takes Wind Power Gold
For the year of 2008, the United States has surpassed Germany as the nation generating the most electricity from wind power. The addition of new windmills has obviously become a commonplace occurrence in America.
Part of the reason for this surge in new windmills is likely correlated to the way in which wind farm businesses operate and find new locations for wind farms. Although there are a few environmental regulations regarding where a wind farm can be located, and how big the wind mills can be, generally speaking, the strength and consistency of wind speeds is the only factor one must consider before deciding to invest capital resources in building a new windmill. For this reason, wind power suppliers have been courting local town community boards and private land owners for leases on land to build wind farms. Before the lease is acquired, the land in question is never being used for any productive enterprise, and is usually located in towns that have been in an economic slump for the past two decades. These two facts have clearly worked to the advantage of the wind power suppliers in America.
The other good news that comes out of a retrospective on continuing trends from 2008, is that America will also overtake Germany on solar power generation in the years to come. These accomplishments are especially pronounced when you take a look at some of the fiscal policies in place in Germany. Germany has fixed the resale value of solar and wind based electricity, giving it an artificial value two to three times greater than coal based electricity. To overtake Germany without these price controls in place is a testament to the entrepreneurial strength of America.
