Weekly Theme on THE GREEN: DRIVE #1

DRIVE is this week’s theme on THE GREEN. Americans are obsessed with their cars. People will literally drive down the block to get a coffee. In fact, maybe that is why our waist lines increase; we barely stand up from our cubes, or walk more than is needed to get to our cars. Nonetheless, if we love our cars so much, then it makes sense to ensure that our cars are not polluting the environment. After all, it seems more like a love/hate relationship with our cars if they get us where we need to be (love), but they spew out black clouds of doom (hate) in the process.
Everything hinges on transportation, which is the real issue that humanity grapples with when they consider cars. Every segment of society that operates in the market place – everything and everyone – needs some type of solution for transportation. This is why your friendly neighborhood oil company has become so powerful and influential in today’s society. The oil companies and refineries that bring us transportation every day are offering us a centralized solution.
Centralization means that many consumers get a product from a regional distribution center that is connected to a chain of nationwide distribution centers. A high quality, reliable product can be delivered to consumers with centralization because huge companies with massive overheads can invest in proven technology and infrastructure. This type of business also benefits the executive portions of the company, because large profits can be spread around the upper management in the company; this explains all the talk about record oil profits you may have noticed in the news recently. That is basically centralization in a nutshell, but make sure to come back tomorrow for the opposite solution to centralization.
Now that you understand the background of the situation, hopefully you are excited to hear about some of the positive solutions to these problems in the transportation business. Never fear, that is what THE GREEN is all about: positivity. We are on a mission to scour the world for innovations that are worthy of your consideration and maybe even your support.
BIG IDEAS FOR A SMALL PLANET: DRIVE
DRIVE is pretty straightforward. It’s all about new car innovations as well as options that are more accessible and affordable to consumers, like the Lexus hybrid shown in the video below.
THIS WEEK ON Eco-Documentaries: FOREST FOR THE TREES
This documentary deals with the life of Judi Barr, an activist against unrestricted logging. She was taking part in a Earth First! rally when the car she was driving in was bombed. She was then arrested by the FBI and charged with eco-terrorism. This documentary focuses on her trial, which occurred 5 years after Judi died.
The voting period is almost over, so make sure to login to THE GREEN mini-site and vote on our WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA? Contest. A lot of people submitted short videos on their BIG IDEA to save the planet. We hope you enjoy and may the best idea to win.
