"Copyright free" can conjure up images of bad clip art, corny MIDI samples and old stories that have been told many, many, many (yes, that many) times. It seems nothing is free, not the good stuff anyway, not the music, pictures or clips that will give a project the professional polish it needs.
Getting music for a low/no-budget project can be a monumental task unless the friend who always wanted to score a film actually gets it together and hands the tracks over before the picture is locked. Sounds rather unlikely... but there is a ray of light in the constricted environment of propriety. Moby.
Moby?! Yeah, Moby! The guy who sold millions of records and is one of the hottest DJs this side of the planet. Moby set up an easy-to-use website, mobygratis.com, where students and non-profit filmmakers can download tracks of his music free to use in their projects. Moby recognizes that some of the music he makes will never make it onto a record or out into the world because it lacks commercial appeal, but he says these tracks are perfect for films because they do not have lyrics and they're composed for film. He’s enthusiastic about his music finding a life outside his studio in the hands of emerging filmmakers.
In an interview with Sundance Channel Online Moby recalled studying film in college and watching his fellow classmates struggle to find original music for their projects. As a musician he was set, but the impression of unoriginal music in student films stuck with him and inspired him to launch mobygratis.com.
Mobygratis.com is user-friendly and intuitive, simply sign up, log-in, listen and apply for a license. There are around sixty tracks on the site now and Moby plans on updating the site every few months with twenty new tracks. The music can’t be downloaded on the spot so if you’re in the middle of an edit you’re going to have to wait to get approval before you see if it works in your project. Despite a minor set back to the edit schedule it’s a great deal on really cool music that certainly can’t be found elsewhere. Moby’s generosity is extended in that if the project does turn a profit he only requires a small fee to be paid that will go into the pocket of a charitable foundation.
Perhaps a new movement is afoot in which artists will recognize the personal profit that comes in openly sharing their work. A profit that isn’t gained in dollars and cents but in seeing their work take on a new life in the hands of another artist. And perhaps a day will come when filmmakers are able to tell their stories that include the products of their environment without having to pay big bucks.
