Top 10 Most Thrilling Dexter Missions
Top 10 Most Thrilling Dexter Missions
There's dark; and then there's Dexter. A killer killing killers. In honor of its final season, and of tonight's Dexter episode of THE WRITERS' ROOM, we're presenting Dexter's greatest missions; his most captivating "kills," if you will. After all, it takes a great writer to make us understand the point of view of a vigilante serial killer.
Exploring the world of a killer is something TV writers do best. This week on THE WRITERS' ROOM, go behind-the-scenes of Dexter with actor Michael C. Hall, show runner Scott Buck, and the team who brought Dexter Morgan to life. Watch THE WRITERS' ROOM: DEXTER, Monday August 12 at 10pm.Author: Oliver Miller

In order to enter into the world of Dexter, we're going to have to decide that the people he kills are worth killing. Dexter has a fairly jaundiced view of the world, so in his eyes, it's just fine to murder a sleazy used car salesman. But Dexter conforms to his unique moral code here, as always, and so the killing is justified by the fact that the car salesman in question is in fact a murderer himself. "You were right about the ample cargo space," Dexter says, as he shoves the salesman into the trunk. And what does Dexter remove from the salesman's head to taunt him during the kill? His toupee, of course! Just one more reminder of his web of lies.

Miguel Prado sympathizes with Dexter, in the same weird way that the audience often does. Prado is an Assistant D.A. who admires Dexter for taking care of business in his own unique way, and so Dexter trains him and takes him under his wing. But then, Prado goes bad (or worse, depending on your point of view). He starts killing people out of vengeance, which offends Dexter's tightly-wound moral code. So in the end, Dexter takes down his own disciple, killing him with a wire. "I accept you, Dexter, like a brother," Miguel says. "I killed my brother," Dexter replies. ...Whoops.

Don't mess with Dexter's family! Can no one understand this? Nathan marks a rare exception to Dexter's code. Mr. Marten isn't actually a fellow killer -- he's a pedophile. And when he goes after the daughter of Dexter's soon-to-be-wife, he's marked himself for doom, and ends up getting strangled by our (anti) hero.

Even though Dexter is still grieving from the murder of his wife, he takes a little time out to do some killing of his own. Boyd was a member of "The Group," a particularly unsavory organization whose mission is serial rape and murder. Boyd was somewhat easily found out as being a bad guy -- he took unnatural delight in his job, which involved picking up the carcasses of dead animals. It took a while for Dexter to finally get rid of Boyd. But even when Dexter finally killed him, he still felt kind of dead inside. Yes, sometimes even serial-killing can't take away the sting of losing your beloved wife.

Mary was a nurse who killed her patients (among whom was Dexter's father), letting them die slow, agonizing deaths. This was Dexter's first kill, instigated by his father, and he's pretty bad at it. "Things were a little sloppy at the beginning," he admits. Well, yeah; he was still dipping his toes into the whole serial-murderer thing.

In the case of Camilla Figg, Dexter actually undertakes a rare mercy killing. Camilla is suffering from terminal lung cancer, and Dexter helps her out of her misery, at her own request, by feeding her key lime pie with the special ingredient of a euthanizing agent. A longtime family friend, there were hints that Camilla may have known Dexter's secret. Whether she did or not, Dexter felt a closeness to Camilla, and carried out her request for the "perfect pie". It's a rare moment of kindness for Dexter, who usually has trouble relating to other human beings in a compassionate way.

After killing his brother at the end of season one, Dexter entered into an affair with Lila; a woman who only added to his darkness, and who also thought she could partake in it. Wrong. Lila killed Dexter's principle nemesis, Sergeant James Doakes, but once again, it was a violation of Dexter's delicate moral code. And so he killed her. "You wanted to be close to me?" he says to Lila, before he stabs her in the heart with a knife. "This is the best I have to offer." Break-ups are tough.

Santos killed Dexter's mom, back when Dexter was only four. Lila had talked Dexter out of killing Santos before, but Dexter refused to make the same mistake twice. He also deviates from his normal method in this case, killing Santos via a particularly horrifying method — a chainsaw — the same way Dexter's mother was killed in front of him as a child. It's particularly… messy. But for Dexter, this time, it's personal.

"Icing" (so to speak) your own brother has got to go pretty near the top of this list. Brian, Dexter's brother, was a serial killer of women, and eventually we realized that he was doing it to bring him and Dexter closer together; to give them something in common. But Brian's plan also involved killing Dexter's adopted sister Deb, who he saw as a "fake" member of the family. Dexter wasn't having any of this, and so he duly killed his brother; the one person who could really understand him. It's an important moment for Dexter, and for his moral code -- preventing the pain of others is more important to him that assuaging his own sense of loneliness. It's hard being Dexter, and there couldn't be anything harder than murdering Brian. Talk about family dysfunction!

"Do you think you're better than me?" Mitchell asks Dexter. "No, but I want to be," our anti-hero replies.
Dexter has very good reason to seek revenge on Mitchell. After all, the Trinity Killer murdered Dexter's wife Rita, and left Dexter's son crying in a pool of his mother's blood -- scarred in the same way that Dexter was destroyed as a child.
The additional sting is that Mitchell was something of a mentor to Dexter. Rita had survived four seasons of the show before being killed by him; and she survived without knowing about Dexter's dark secret. But it's impossible to know what Mitchell may have said to her before her death -- he may have divulged Dexter's alter-ego secret. And we'll never find out from Mitchell: Dexter killed him with a hammer. But no amount of revenge can make up for the harm that Mitchell did -- and that's something that Dexter will have to live with. This killing business can be a tough game indeed.
