Top 10 90′s Songs from Daniel’s Mixtape
Top 10 90's Songs from Daniel's Mixtape
A good mixtape is a snapshot of a point in time. It tells the story of the mix tape maker and the mixtape recipient, while also offering a neatly curated look at the music of the moment. When Daniel finds a trove of mixtapes in his attic, he is transported back to his life before Death Row. He was just a normal high school kid with a normal high school sweetheart. It also happened to be 1993, a critical year for popular music. So, what songs were on Daniel’s mixtape?

Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter
This track was the b-side to Pearl Jam’s big hit “Jeremy”. Ah, Eddie Vedder. Back in his long-hair, t-shirt wearing days. Oh wait.

Mazzy Star - Into Dust
A real shoe-gazer that sparked plenty of mid-90s make-out sessions for high school kids trapped in small towns.

Cracker - Low
While the tune will get stuck in your head, it’s probably best remembered for the awesome video featuring Cracker frontman David Lowery getting his ass kicked by comedian Sandra Bernhard.

The Pharcyde - 4 Better or For Worse
The Pharcyde’s jazzy beats and humorous rhymes made them West Coast hip hop’s foil to ‘gangsta rap’. After more than 20 years, this track, and the entire album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, are now considered classics.

Stone Temple Pilots - Creep
Few bands personify the mid-90s quite like Stone Temple Pilots. The video for “Creep” was actually the band’s second shot for MTV. The first, directed by Gus van Sant, was canned due to explicit depictions of sex and drug use.

Björk - Human Behavior
A good 15 years before anyone ever heard the name Lady Gaga, an Icelandic solo artist tripped us out with her novel take on pop music and trippy music videos (including this one, directed by a then unknown French guy named Michel Gondry). In the 90s, everybody’s cool older sister had a copy of Björk’s Debut.

A Tribe Called Quest - Check the Rhime
This track off of the instant classic The Low End Theory is a perfect of example of why that album is #154 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of all time.

Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box
Nirvana’s third, and final, studio album, In Utero, came out in 1993, and “Heart-Shaped Box” was its first single. It’s the song your cool punk-rock friend liked to casually mention at a party.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Today
This music video invoked Billy Corgan driving an ice cream truck to what looked like the coolest party ever in the middle of the dessert or as people call it now, Burning Man.

Suede - The Drowners
It wouldn’t be 1993 without a little bit of Britpop. Suede never really hit it big in the US, but this track made it onto plenty of mixtapes and was a forerunner to singles that gained popularity in the US such as Oasis and Blur.
