Top 10 Things You’d Do After 20 Years in Prison
Top 10 Things You’d Do After 20 Years in Prison
After almost 20 years on Death Row for the rape and murder of his teenage girlfriend, Daniel Holden is going home. His conviction has been vacated due to new DNA evidence, thrusting him back into a world he no longer knows. Sundance Channel’s new, original series RECTIFY follows Daniel during his first week back in the small, Georgia town he used to know. What will Daniel do with his first few days of freedom? You’ll have to tune into the premiere on Monday, April 22nd at 9PM to find out, but considering the project comes from the same masterminds you brought us BREAKING BAD, we should probably expect a few surprises. We asked the cast, along with some other celebs, what they would do after 20 years in prison. Their answers may surprise you.

10. It would be like an acid trip.
You probably recognize RECTIFY creator Ray McKinnon from his acting work on shows like “Deadwood” and “Sons of Anarchy,” but he is also an accomplished writer, director and producer. McKinnon was inspired to create the series after reading about men who were released from death row after DNA evidence raised new questions about their convictions. And it was that first day of freedom that really got McKinnon thinking about making his idea a TV show. While most of us might think about diving into all of those things we’ve missed, McKinnon focuses on the shock and sensory overload he would probably experience after 20 years on Death Row.

9. Murder the people who put me in prison.
Leave it to a bunch of horror directors to get gruesome, but also be sort of honest. Forget hugging your loved ones and taking a nice, warm bubble bath, the directors behind the found footage horror sequel S-VHS want to go after the people who put them behind bars. They’d also go after the police and the judge within the first 48-72 hours. See you back in the slammer, dudes!

8. Give me 20 years to think about it.
For Aden Young, who plays Daniel Holden in RECTIFY, the question “What would be the first thing you did after 20 years in prison?” isn’t just a conversation starter. While most people answer instinctively (which leads to a lot of to responses about sex, food, sleep and murder), Aden knows it’s a lot more nuanced than that. What is it really like to get out of prison after you’ve prepared yourself to die and given up on a world outside those prison walls? Someone like Aden, who has actually had to think about it a lot, knows it definitely takes time to figure out your next step.

7. Get a Filet-O-Fish.
Chowing down on favorite foods is a pretty common answer, but not many people single out McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish (the McRib, that’s another story). But for Luke Kirby, who plays attorney Jon Stern in RECTIFY, the taste of fish patty with melty American cheese would certainly scratch that 20-year itch.

6. Soak up the sunshine.
In episode 2 of RECTIFY, Daniel Holden spends some quality time with his toes in the grass and his face in the sun. And that’s exactly what J. Smith Cameron, who plays Daniel’s mother Janet, would do. Well, after she got over the sensory overload of the outside world.

5. Look up.
You probably recognize RECTIFY creator Ray McKinnon from his acting work on shows like “Deadwood” and “Sons of Anarchy,” but he is also an accomplished writer, director and producer. 4. Adelaide Clemens would go for a run.
One thing you definitely can’t do in a prison cell is run away. So Adelaide Clemens, who plays Daniel’s compassionate sister-in-law Tawney, would go for a run. A really long run. Come to think of it, it seems as though Tawney could also use a good run to shake off some of Ted Jr.’s, manipulative tendencies.

3. Hooker and a kebab.
Boys will be boys, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that between actor James Buckley and his THE NECESSARY DEATH OF CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN director would head straight for the kebab shop and the nearest brothel. There doesn’t seem to be either in Griffin, Georgia, but there is plenty of sex.

2. Take a nice nap.
We’d have to side with Abigail Spencer, who plays Daniel’s sister Amantha in RECTIFY, on this one. After 20 years on a prison cot, a nice nap sounds perfect. But, sleep is another thing that just doesn’t come easy for Daniel when he comes back to a home he no longer knows. And sleeplessness can make people do strange things.
