Bio

SOMETIMES THE DREAM IS REAL is a micro-opera in three acts. The first two are dreams, and the third might be reality or might be even more of a dream. When I started developing it, I knew that I had a lot of thoughts and opinions about "politics" and what that word means in our culture... but I also knew that I didn't feel comfortable making big declarations or pronouncements about How Things Are. I wanted to find a more personal way to address the subject. Is there anything more personal than a dream?

I had recently visited an excellent website started by a woman named Sheila Heti, where people submitted their dreams about Hillary and Barack. In fact, I was honored to be one of the people whose dreams got posted (mine was about hanging out with Hillary while she was wearing only tatty underwear with her sportcoat-- no skirt-- and feeling weird about it). This sparked a whole series of thoughts about how an election, which is such a grand cultural event, also exists as a deeply personal experience in so many different minds. As the writing developed, I kind of let any random thoughts float into my head-- books I had read, fantasies I'd had, things that made me nervous. Eventually I had a pile of those, which I sorted out into what became the libretto. Although this piece is not long, it represents a lot of work by a lot of people, to whom I am very grateful.
