BIO
Mike O'Brien grew up in Marinwood, a small community north of San Rafael, California. He graduated from CSU, Sacramento in 1993 with a BA in Communications (Television & Film) and a minor in Public Relations. He was a Founding Father for the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at CSU, Sacramento and president of the academic Order of Omega society.
He attended The Dominican College of San Rafael and earned his California Teaching Credential/CLAD with emphasis in Spanish - and is currently working on his Masters in Curriculum Development.
He was hired into the Pleasanton Unified School District in 1998. This is his eleventh year teaching in Pleasanton, six years of which have been teaching fourth grade at Phoebe Hearst Elementary. While working in Pleasanton, Mike became actively involved with the "Go Green" initiative in his district. He is 4Rs Certified, Teaching others how to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot - through the teachings of the irecycle@school Education Center and implements these in his classroom and school. Mike is also a Flex Your Power Educator and works with the California State Energy Efficiency Organization, "Flex Your Power,"program. His school district was the state's winner of the Flex Your Power Award for education because Pleasanton is California's first solar school district, the highest performing district in terms of energy efficiency practices and is setting an example for the nation in the area of sustainability.
Mike is also a Protect Your Climate! curriculum coordinator and is working with the company Strategic Energy Innovations, on piloting their curriculum in the classroom. He teaches how children can learn to save the environment and lower their carbon footprints. He has a passion for teaching, humor, and teaching his "Go Green" ideas.
Mike is married to his beautiful wife of seven years, Anna. They live in Mountain House, California where Anna works as an elementary school teacher. They are kept very busy with their three children, Sean (3), Kaitlin (2) and Morgan (3 months).
