Professional Hypermiler

BIO

Financial advisor Bill Kinney took it upon himself to try specific driving techniques he heard about to see if he could improve his MPG while saving money at the pump. He quickly discovered that he could significantly improve the car's gas performance by implementing techniques that are now known as hypermiling.

Hypermiling has become known as a term used to describe a driver who strives to exceed their vehicle's EPA fuel economy rating by implementing specific driving techniques such as pulsing & gliding (p&g), avoiding brakes, parking face out, avoid idling and slowing down, for example. Five years later, Bill prides himself on not only being a professional hypermiler, but in being a passionate one as well. As a result, Bill has become one of the leading hypermilers in the coun-try and currently co-holds the world record for the most distance traveled on one tank of gas: 2354 miles with an average of 170 MPG, a record he set at the 2006 Honda Insight Marathon in Oklahoma. Bill strongly believes that these techniques, car maintenance, and state of mind (anticipating red lights for example) are crucial factors that contribute to a hypermiler's success. Tire pressure, synthetic oil, and keeping your car tuned are just some of the maintenance tips that will drastically increase your car's MPG performance.

Bill has been an active member of the "hybrid" community and has won Hybridfest two years in a row (2007-2008), a hybrid car festival that challenges the best hypermilers from across the country to compete in an MPG challenge. In 2008, he averaged 109 MPG driving his Honda Insight, a 109% increase over the EPA estimate. He is determined to get the word out and is consistently asked to speak at corporate seminars and alternative fuel fairs across the country.
