Resolutions for the New Year

lynn_resolution_01

Okay, resolutions. Not the tiresome, predictable (1) lose weight (let’s face it, unlikely) or (2) write what used to be called the Great American Novel (even less likely) but something easy, something sensible, something that suits these new times we are living in: Stop overpaying for clothes! Don’t buy anything in a store that doesn’t take returns! And by returns, I don’t mean the flimsy piece of paper known as a store credit handed out by places like Chanel and Prada; I mean cash back, or full credit applied to your credit card!

Company of We: because you’re worth it, “democratic luxury”

01/04/10 — 0 comments

ef_we_02Designers (L) Jayzel Samonte and (R) Christopher Crawford

I’m off to meet Christopher Crawford and Jayzel Samonte, partners and designers of the breakout men’s brand Company of We, at the intimate confines of their Financial District high-rise. When I arrive, I learn that I’ll be missing out on my introduction to Crawford, but Samonte has enough energy and charisma to carry on about the collection and life’s intricacies solo.

Before the final bell gongs

12/24/09 — 0 comments

lynn_bellgong_01

I know your friends, and I know what they don’t want for Christmas: a Snuggie. These repulsive blankets-with-sleeves may be all over television, they may crowd the aisles of major department stores (well, Kmart, if not Bergdorf’s), and, since you have only a few shopping days before the final bell gongs, you may try to convince yourself that this item looks like a Comme des Garçons blanket coat and purchase one for some luckless soul on your list. Do not do this.

The nature of a popup

lynn_popup_01Rodarte for Target slip dress in black

“Would you like an order form?” says the sales guy, teeth chattering but still cheerful as a Moonie, outside Target-to-Go. It’s the coldest day of the year, and it feels like it’s the coldest day ever, and we are practically standing in the Hudson River — Target has set up a clever if extremely temporary shop at the Gansevoort Street entrance of the Highline with a big sign instructing visitors to “1) Dash up and pick out gift 2) order by number 3) dash off with wrapped gifts that are ready to give.”

Market Appointment: Risto spring 2010

12/07/09 — 0 comments

ef_risto_02Piece from Risto’s spring 2010 collection

Upon arriving at Nouveau Public Relations, I am instantly drawn to the spring 2010 collection by Risto Bimbiloski, entitled Risto. The designer has experience with the men’s design house of Louis Vuitton in the knitwear division, and the brand has continued to support his success since his departure. Bimbiloski introduced his first line in 2000 and took it to the commercial level in 2004. Spring 2010 marks his debut runway showing in New York, surely the first of many.

Market appointment: Cushnie et Ochs spring 2010

Parsons School of Design graduates and former rivals for the Parsons Designer of the Year Award, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs, joined talents three seasons ago to create the line Cushnie et Ochs. The pair wanted their third collection together to be a new take on sexy — so they accentuated the female body with proportions, keeping the silhouettes clean, providing cutouts in new and unexpected areas, and adding more draping and organic shapes.

Black Friday shopping foray

11/30/09 — 1 comment

(L) Lynn yaeger with (R) Michaell Musto

“It’s great! I want it! What is it?” says Michael Musto, gossip columnist extraordinaire (and Sundance contributor), lovingly fingering a kelly-green felt mat decorated with cut-out reindeer. It’s Black Friday, and MM and I are exploring the bargain stores on 34th Street as part of our annual let’s-see-what-we-can-buy-for-our-friends-that’s-embarrassingly-cheap shopping foray. Our first stop is Jack’s, putatively a 99-cent store, though it turns out that’s true only for a small section of items on the main floor, which is why we are lingering in that area for as long as possible, examining hot-pink Christmas stockings decorated with curious op-art circles, a Santa dish towel that MM tosses into his basket with exuberance (“Can you put this in the microwave? Seriously? Because my friend Bill says you should heat one up and put it on your face — it’s good for your complexion!”), and a heart-shaped pin that says “Mom,” which the lucky Mrs. Musto won’t actually be getting for Christmas — she’ll have to wait until her birthday, in January, to receive this rare treasure.

New York Vintage: ahead of the class

11/11/09 — 2 comments

ef_ny_vintage_21Exterior of NY Vintage

As I walk into New York Vintage and take in the lush, vibrantly-decorated surroundings, Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven is a Place on Earth” starts playing in my mind’s soundtrack. It’s official; I have died and gone to vintage heaven. If you’re like me, you love all that vintage has to offer, but you loathe sifting through smelly bins and unorganized racks to find the perfect piece. If this is your M.O. then New York Vintage is meant for you. The boutique’s owner and stylist, Shannon Hoey, takes all of the guesswork out of the equation. Hoey carefully selects every piece of the impressive rental and for-sale collections.
