Brooklyn’s Renegade Craft Fair

This past weekend saw the Renegade Craft Fair return to Brooklyn, where hundreds upon hundreds of indie crafters pitched their tents in McCarren Park to hock their wares to a handmade-hungry assemblage of hipsters.

The infestation of woodland creatures that has long plagued the Etsy-fueled handmade scene in the form of appliqué felt fawn silhouettes on pillows, or laser-cut bird-on-a-branch silk-screened tees, has perhaps begun a retreat, though we’re not entirely out of the woods yet with this trend. But there were a few printmakers to note who were busting out of the squirrel-shaped mold.

Print from Florence Gidez

Florence Gidez was one, and though her subjects sometimes do include animals, they are rendered in such a truly intricate way, and with such a spirit of the unreal, that her creations go way beyond what you get when you slap a set of antlers on a T-shirt and call it a day. Odd juxtapositions of trailers and dilapidated structures or giant turtles and barns cover T-shirts and prints, and she even offers construct-a-prairie-barn kits made of paper, creating a fantasy world that’s not so much the cutesie-poo stuff of your average DIY-er. Thankfully.

T-shirt from Regan Smith Clarke

Regan Smith Clarke is another T-shirt and poster maker who stood out from the crowd. Invoking vintage poster design, he has started his own brand based on two things — his name and his love for old advertising style — and nothing more. But his keen sense of color and type, and his ability to both channel and update a beloved bygone era of commercial design, make these tees well worth the $20.

With makers like these branching out into less-hoofed territory with more thoughtful, intricate, and original designs, perhaps we can look forward to the next wave in DIY to hit the indie craft scene soon.
