I don’t know the type of Emmy for which SAVILE ROW could be eligible. This in-depth look at the famed bespoke tailors in London’s Mayfair district is a three-part docu-miniseries, which is a rare format in U.S. television. I fear that, like many of the best things, it might fall helplessly between category cracks. I just know that this is some of the best stuff I’ve ever seen on the small screen. It’s totally fantastic and grabs you from the very first frame.
Let’s start with genre: This is a comedy-thriller, swinging deftly from funny to menacing. It reminded me of Election in the way it was, by turns, both hilarious and horrifying.
Based on the straightforward title, I guessed the basic place and topic of this program, but knew nothing else. That’s exactly how you should go into watching this, so I don’t want to give too many specifics lest I spoil even a moment of the immense fun this series offers. Rather, ask yourself these five questions:
1. Do you fancy yourself an Anglophile?
2. Would it amuse you to see a world-renowned tailor dressed to the nines, on a recon mission, breaking and entering a soon-to-be-open Abercrombie & Fitch store?
3. Want to know more about the origins of authentic Harris Tweed?
4. Care to watch as a genuine world explorer gives you a tour of his thoroughly customized jacket, including the secret pocket for his knife-on-a-string?
5. Love the idea of a profession that promises to make (I kid you not) The Hunchback of Notre Dame look like Justin Timberlake?
If you answered ‘Yes’ even to just two of the above, cancel your 8:00 P.M. plans (or set your DVRs) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. In keeping with the spirit of this show, I’m going to make you a George Zimmer of Men’s Warehouse-esque promise: You’re going to like the way this series looks. I guarantee it.
