HABILLÉES Pt. 1: Meet Agnès B.

Agnès Boulard, better known by her TV pseudonym, Mademoiselle Agnès, is a bona fide celebrity in France. She has been covering fashion for nearly two decades and sits front row at all the shows. (We don’t really have a Mlle. Agnès equivalent in America; compared with CNN alum Elsa Klensch, Boulard is downright zany, yet she’s far more serious about couture than any of the hosts of MTV’s House of Style.)

Boulard regularly collaborates with Loïc Prigent, best known Stateside as the director of the acclaimed documentary MARC JACOBS & LOUIS VUITTON and the doc mini-series THE DAY BEFORE. Now Prigent — a fellow contributor here at FULL FRONTAL FASHION — has turned his camera on his friend, following M.A. during the Spring ’10 shows in both New York and Paris for the program HABILLÉES POUR L’ÉTÉ 2010 (DRESSED UP FOR SUMMER 2010).

In addition to being a lighthearted work of you-are-there/behind-the-scenes filmmaking, the one-hour special is built around the not-so-happy premise that Paris isn’t doing enough to support its emerging design talent. It’s broken into six 10 minute long segments. The first starts with Mlle. Agnès in Manhattan for New York Fashion Week, where she gives props to Anna Wintour for helping fledgling American talent thrive. Not only does the editor regularly feature up-and-comers on the pages of American Vogue, but the magazine sponsors the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Fashion Fund mentoring program.

The first segment also features celeb cameos by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Jason Schwartzman, and Kate Moss as well as interviews with burgeoning designers Joseph Altuzarra and Alexander Wang. Also interviewed is Diane Von Fürstenberg, who, through the aforementioned CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, acted as Wang’s fashion godmother.

Also highlighted: Tavi Gevinson, the 13-year-old blogger from Oak Park, Illinois, known for her Style Rookie website and a collaboration with Rodarte for Target. I find her obsession with high-end fashion at such a young age slightly disturbing (she started when she was just 11!), but ultimately, I can’t help but be charmed by her enthusiasm and Dawn Wiener eyewear.
