Slept in after our swill and spill last night and headed to lunch at Hippodrome Hotel’s Hip Kitchen to meet the designers and pontificate about fashion journalism. It was a great chance to have one on one time with the designers, get to know them and hear what else they are working on.
Next I was off to Barbara Berger’s house whom I met last night. She is an eccentric New Yorker who is now based here and in Paris. Her vintage jewelry is well-known to insiders like Karl Lagerfeld who helped her secure a show at the Louvre. I could have stayed all day!! She had a treasure trove of vintage clothing, jewelry, toys and vases.
Then it was on to the DFashion Day 2.
Designs by: (L) Carlos Ortega ; (R) Julia y Renata
First up was Carlos Ortega . His conceptual backward shirts, full skirts and bustles had me hooked. Ortega also has a great sense of color from what I saw in his aubergine dream of a dress and his mix and match of plaids. More ruffles! Well, we are in Mexico and I say bring it on. With his keen perception of modern day sportswear I think this gent has strong potential.
Next up was Marvin y Quetzal . Marvin’s partner died last year and this was the first time he showed solo. Needless to say it was a very personal show. Veering on the avant-garde I see Mexico’s version of Miguel Adrover here. Marvin has a joyful flirt with sweatpants material for tops and bottoms, elongated sheer draped shirts and sharply tailored leather jackets with tux tails on the front. And who doesn’t love a jumper for men with a ‘peek-a-butt’ back?
Temores’ collection
Temores started off very Annie Hall with sleeveless blazers and sportif shorts but then moved towards a more feminine look with bright sack dresses and jersey minis. But what most stood out? His soundtrack! It was almost distracting because all I could think about is what cover this loungey song was. I finally realized it was Rihanna’s “Please Don’t Stop The Music”. Hot!
Alexia Ulibarri obviously went the ‘Viva Frida’ route and I loved it. This coquettish collection was a crowd pleaser with its whimsical headpieces and floral printed dresses. I love a model that flirts with the photographers with a wink and wiggle. Reminds me of old Westwood shows, you know, when fashion was fun?

Final show at 10:30 (hello hunger!) was Julia y Renata. The disheveled dresses were quite fun and packed in all the trends I’ve been seeing times ten. The biggest drapes! The most fluttering ruffles! And all in jungle red. Some of it looked like a lint roller after it’s been spun across a fabric scrap pile but overall the collection was fairly powerful. I think Mrs. Vreeland, with her obsession with all things rouge, would of been thrilled.
Nothing wild this evening. A quick dinner at a Spanish restaurant then home. When am I going to have Mexican food?! I’m about to hit the taco stands on the corner with my bottle of Imodium…
