From MoMA to Armani – an evening of art

09/16/09 — 3 comments

Midway through Fashion Week, my crew and I decided to have a evening filled to the brim with art.

My first stop was MoMA, where supermodel extraordinaire Linda Evangelista and Notify Jean’s Maurice Ohayon hosted a party to celebrate Ron Arad’s newest exhibit, “No Discipline.”

Rejecting sculpture norms, Ron’s pieces are otherworldly and mix all sorts of materials. Linda met Ron through Maurice and soon enough were working on a collaboration together. Mixing their specialties — fashion and sculpture — Linda and Ron created a purse that Linda flaunted on her arm last night. Part form and part style, the unisex and light-up purse was only a prototype but will eventually be on sale. Until then, you can check it out in Ron Arad’s exhibit, which has another prototype installed with a pair of red high heels stuck in the purse for a bit of flair.

The mash up of fashion and art was also on display by the mix of guests roaming the halls. From the fashion world, Brana Wolf, Robbie Myers, Hamish Bowles, Yigal Azrouel and a gaggle of long-legged models were all present. Painter Francesco Clemente and curator Vito Schnabel were just some of the guests from the art world seen taking in the museum at night.

My next stop was the Giorgio Armani party for the Richard Hambleton exhibit. Decidedly un-MoMA, the gallery was in a bare, downtown warehouse, making the installed graffiti pieces really pop. Many MoMA attendees like Amerie, Mary J. Blige and Stephen Dorff made their way downtown for their own art-filled night.

Curators Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida traveled the world to collect all the pieces, a commitment that impressed Giorgio enough to get his support for this pop up during Fashion Week. I’ve known Richard for thirty years and I have always loved his attention to details, specifically shadows. Graffiti was getting big in the early 80s in the art scene, but his unique take always stood out. Maybe that is why every piece sold out by the end of the night.
