Like countless heavy metal bands around the world, the Scandinavian variety of the 1990s – known as “black metal” – reveled in shock tactics, gruesome make-up and anti-Christian imagery. However, when some musicians were linked to church burnings – including the destruction of a 12th century landmark – and a murder, the movement earned headlines around the world. Attempting to discover the truth behind the sensation, documentarians Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell head to Norway to investigate and interview black metal’s most notorious figures.
