When he was arrested for holding up a bank in Abilene, Texas, in 2003, J.L. “Red” Rountree — then aged 91 — won fame as the world’s oldest active bank robber. But behind the bizarre headlines was a far more curious question: why would a formerly successful businessman with an untarnished record embark on a life of crime at age 87?
