Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is a New York banker, living happily with his girlfriend and potter Molly Jensen (Demi Moore) in their shared apartment. At his bank, Sam discovers some discrepancies with several accounts and highlights them to his friend and coworker, Carl Bruner (Tony Goldwyn), who promises he will investigate the matter. That night, Sam and Molly’s apartment is broken into by Willie Lopez (Rick Aviles). In the struggle, Willie kills Sam, leaving Molly devastated.
Sam regains consciousness and quickly discovers he is a ghost, but cannot find a way to let Molly know of his existence.
