After a well-known scam artist is believed to be killed in a fiery car crash, suspicious investigator Abe Holt (Whitaker) pays a visit to frozen rural Minnesota. The sole beneficiary of the deceased's $1 million life insurance policy is an impoverished sister (Julia Stiles), who, with her violent husband (Jeremy Renner), appears to have a lot to hide.
