Whit Stillman's witty and nostalgic comedy of manners about a circle of Manhattan prep school teens marked the directorial debut of a fresh new voice in American cinema and offered one of the very few sympathetic depictions of upper-middle-class society. The closed world of Nick (Christopher Eigeman) and his pals is rapidly becoming irrelevant; even males are in short supply this social season. As a quick remedy, an outsider (Edward Clements) is enlisted to join their group. Stillman earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
