The turbulent 1947 partition of British India into modern India and Pakistan is the backdrop for Deepa Mehta's child's-eye examination of religious intolerance. Eight-year-old Lenny (Maia Sethna), the daughter of affluent parents in Lahore, observes the mysterious adult world as sectarian violence breaks out among Muslims and Hindus, when the new national borders are established. At the center of Lenny's world is her Hindu nanny (Nandita Das), an object of affection for numerous men, including a gentle Muslim masseur and a roguish Ice Candy Man. Stereo/Letterbox/Subtitles
