With its beehive hair-dos and garish decor, John Waters's comedy flashback revels in the tasteless kitsch of the early 1960s. Ricki Lake stars as Tracy Turnblad, a pleasantly plump teenage dancing fiend who dreams of appearing on a local TV music show. Before long, Tracy is a civil-rights crusader waging a battle for on-screen integration against the TV station's owner (Devine, who also plays Tracy's mother) and the show's snooty established star (Colleen Fitzpatrick). Costarring Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry.
