Spanish filmmaker Salvador Garcia Ruiz channels the spirit of the french new wave in this sexually frank adaptation of a novel by Almudena Grandes. It’s ’80s Madrid, and three bohemian art students, Maria Jose (Adriana Ugarte), Marcos (Nilo Mur) and Jaime (Biel Duran) engage in a menage a trois energized by the trio’s passion for art and truth as well as pure carnal desire. Engaging lead performances and psychologically astute observations of the power dynamics within the threesome distinguish this exuberant search for meaning and identity. (2009)
