Does anyone happen to know?
Certainly the reviews were very positive. Obviously, the people posting to this message board are really enthusiastic. The morning DJ on the radio station I hear at work talks about Spectacle all the time. And there was a giant blitz of 2-Sheet posters pasted all over the NY Subway in time for the premiere.
But has the combination of word-of-mouth, advertising & luck generated good ratings? Is the show likely to be renewed by Sundance?
I mention this because there are only a few episodes left in this season. It would be so tragic if this was the end. |

I am and loving it. I look forward to every new episode. Let's hope for the network there are a lot of us out there and they are adequately measuring the audience. Too many quality shows get cancelled.
Elvis Costello is not only a brilliant songwriter and performer, but has a very calm and inquisitive nature. Given that he is an artist, he can perform with the other artists (in every genre, with his own twist, of course) and asks more interesting questions.
Like I said, let's hope that you and I aren't the only ones. |

Well said, elisaz.
So far, every guest has been someone I previously thought I had little interest in. And yet, every episode has been riveting.
Spectacle night has come to be sort of an event in our house--with a special dinner in front of the TV. We would really miss it if it didn't come back for a second season.
But you never know...Elvis may have moved on to some other, even more fantastic project. He may not be interested in another season.
Also really hoping the series is issued on DVD. Just imagine all wonderful out-takes and add'l songs and so forth that didn't make it into each episode. |

I watch Spectacle every Wednesday and I also really look forward to it. Good shows are very hard to come by on TV now a days. I asked DIRECTV to sell channels " a la carte", but the problem is, I would only buy 5 or 6 channels, and they know it, because the rest of it is trash. I would certainely pay more for each channel, though, to improve the quality. The featured movies are great, I find myself watching Sundance about 70 % of the time.

| I certainly hope folks are watching. This show is brilliant. I don't care who the guest is...there are gems in every episode. I've seen them all, most more than once and some I just can't bring myself to delete from the recorder. Thanks Sundance and Elvis. |

I also hope the ratings are off the charts so this show comes back again for at least one more season.
This show is a dream come true for me after loving Elvis' work for more than a decade. What an added surprize to find out after all these years he is quite an engaging fellow, and even more intelligent and interesting than I thought he would be as a music talk show host.
At least we can continue to show our support of the show here since getting to be a Nielsen home is a rare opportunity. You can bet that the show producers and advertisers are checking out what kind of interest is being generated from our comments. |

| This is the best show on television right now. The musci is great, and interviews interesting enlightening and unexpected. Hope all the shows will either be available ON DEMAND or a DVD will be available. Wednesday has never been better. I look forward to each week. |

As for the ratings,we can only hope. It's rare to find a talent like his (Elvis Costello) on TV.
As others have said, the guests are an eclectic group of very entertaining musicians. Elvis can hold his own with them musically.
I would miss this show if it's not continued.
Elvis, please, please don't abandon us! |

| I've been watching since I found out about it. I missed the first two episodes. I'm a big fan and I love the format of the show. Elvis does a great job and I've learned so much about music history by watching. I'm HOOKED! I hope it has a long run. It is one of the best shows on cable. |

You should understand that ratings for Sundance are comparatively low generally. That's partly because it targets a narrow audience (compared to many other channels), but mainly because it isn't part of the basic cable package in most areas, and many people don't pay extra to get it. It isn't available at all in some locations.
All that said, the channel as a whole averages about a 0.3 share; that is, out of every 1000 viewers there are three people watching it at any given time. Even if "Spectacle" is above the average, you'd have to say that there aren't a lot of people watching it. No reflection of the quality of the show -- we all love it, obviously, but it's not reaching (or even trying to reach) a mass audience. |

Thanks, business.doug.
If ratings aren't really a factor, does that mean the "deciders" at Sundance would renew or cancel a show based on their own personal taste? If so, that would be refreshingly non-corporate. |

Doug is yanking numbers out of thin air. Sundance Channel is not nielsen rated. The ratings information that he puports are therefore inaccurate and misleading. Also don't be mislead by his name, he doesn't work at the channel and has no business pretending he does. No offense Doug, just watching out for my fellow Spectacle fans hopes and expectations here. If Sundance Channel were issuing a formal response to this chain it would post as Site Administrator or Sundance Channel not doug.business. Check the tons of other boards where they have responded as such.
That said I think that the prospects are good that it will come back since so many of us love it. I think a real factor has to do with Infiniti and Dell, who sponsored the show. We need to let them know we want our spectacle!!! |

No Sundance isn't *Neilsen* rated and I never claimed they were (they're not the only game in town, you know). There are lots of web sites that carry ratings for cable channels if you care to do a little research (mediabistro.com, mediaweek.com, medialifemagazine.com, etc.). I am definitely not pulling numbers out of thin air.
Sorry about my "name" leading you to think I might work at Sundance -- it's just the address I use for non-personal email and web posts. |

| Not that you're wrong about what the actual numbers probably are, just keep in mind that all those sites that are presenting ratings mediabistro, mediaweek are just guessing and estimating based on comparative industry numbers they are not based on actual quantifiable data like nielsen or arbitron. |

| Of course. Since the OP was asking about ratings, I thought it appropriate to answer the question. I got the sense they were looking for a "ballpark number" of how many people were watching and the answer is "some", but we're not talking in the range of Nick at Night or TBS. |

| Oh, I think ratings are a factor but the expectations are lower. I think the future of shows like this are dictated more by the interest of the producers and host in continuing (obviously), as well as being able to secure corporate "presenters" (in this case, Infiniti and Dell Computers). That throws in issues like the state of the economy. But by all means let Infiniti and Dell know how you feel about the series! |

| after all is said and done-ratings or not-i certainly hope that the folks at Sundance Chanel renew this series whether it be hosted by the brilliant Elvis Costello or not. Remember people that Elton John is also one of the executive producers of this show and maybe who knows-he'll take over for a season and let Elvis write and tour! Elton also has a very eclectic background in music tastes and knowledge so he could be the perfect "replacement" IF Elvis decides not to do a second season. We'd also have to hope that Sundance would decide to renew it and also as stated before that sponsors like Dell and Infiniti would renew as well. Let's all hope this works out for everyone as this show is sooooo needed right now and extremely informative and entertaining. Thanks Elvis.Elton and Sundance for giving us more reason to keep looking and searching for more music!!! |
