I've never been one to dote over an artist so this is a rare comment from me indeed. Regarding "Elvis Costello". I have been moved in many ways over the years by the smallest things. Probably the most influential artist in forming my own musical ideas, I was absolutely blown away when I heard "Allison" for the first time. I was in the army at the time and a friend was listening to it. I was instantly a fan. I bought everything I could get my hands on from him over the next few years, and at one time or another always had at least one of his records in my collection. Truth is, I have listened to everything from him at least a hundred times each. That was the tip of the iceberg though, because I found myself moved even more once I heard songs like "Indoor Fireworks" and Shipbuilding".
It was the little things in his performances, and the subtle but powerful inflections in his voice that I was interested in. He was feeling that song, and giving it to me. Musically I consider myself to be a hack. But I always try to keep in mind with every performance that I give with my songs, that it is... "the smallest things" that really matter.
So Elvis... If your listening... thank you for showing me the value of The Smallest Things.
