| Ever noticed how sterile and lifeless most model home landscapes are? I'm hoping to put an end to that! A local builder is showcasing a Green certified home in a local Fall parade of homes. I wrote a proposal to his company to allow me to turn the home into an educational openhouse to highlight the features of green building and they accepted my proposal. Throughout the home, I have placed descriptive cards which describe the various elements that allowed the builder to receive certification. A self-guided walking tour brochure is provided which leads people throughout the home, to learn facts about elements pertaining to energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, etc. I also received their permission to work with the landscaper to ensure that the yard met the criteria to be certified as a NWF Certified Habitat. The landscape incorporates many plants for wildlife and the property is directly on a retention pond so it was easy to qualify for certification. The home even has an organic vegetable garden! Very unusual and unique for a model home, but another element that can earn points towards Green Certification.
