I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase "Harley" (my name for him) the week before Thanksgiving 2007 and was able to board him 300 yards from my home until May of 2008 when, after my oldest Josh and I finished his corral. He is the most wonderful fella I could ever be partners with.
On June 1st, we did our first saddled ride together, it lasted about 20 minutes before his cinch strap broke (My fault) and I, the sadlle, and blanket bit the dirt. After repairing the cinch strap, rubbing him down, replacing the blanket and saddle, we tried again. This time was a lot less successful as we walked about 20 steps, had our picture taken and then he did two "Hi-Ho silvers" then took off on a buck at which point a was tossed off and landed square on my back. I ended up getting "Life-Choppered" to the Regional Trauma Center in Newark, DE. When I got home the first thing I did was walk into the corral and he came to me, admittedly a bit skiddish, but very loving. It has been a month and ahalf and I am still leary about getting on him, much to my wifes relief.
I watched this show and cried when Peoples horse took off from under him and he was able to stay on and when he got off and walked away and his horse followed him, I literally cried with joy not only for the horse but for Peoples and the rest of the guys on the show. These horses are the most maginificent horses there are. I am a 20 Year Navy Submarine Veteran, who is 90% disabled, with 60% of my heart not working correctly. I wouldn't trade one day with my boy for all of the perfect body parts in the world.
I would love to know how to get a copy of this video, as well as the soundtrack to it also. I was born in Pueblo, Colorado in 1957 and my dad took his own life in Florence, Colorado in 1979. Each time I am near Harley, I am with my entire family as he represents all that is good in this world. If anyone else owns one of these great mustangs or has any idea how these boys from the prison are doing I wojuld sure enjoy talking to ya.
Sincerely,
Bill O'Leary

This is a great program. There are two mustings as a pare of the Cason Platoon of the "Old Guard" at Fort Myers, VA (just outside Washington, DC) These mustangs; one white one black, are in all the Presidents parades and many other certomies in Washington.
Beautiful horses.. |

I've been home now for only a few short months and miss the horses more then I could ever say. A co-worker said that he'd seen the film on Sundance so I decided to try their website to see if it would be played again.
The post about the first ride really moved me and brought back unforgettable memories! Memories of times that will be forever lifechanging in every good way imaginable. The thrill and accomplishment of every ride, especially the first ride is unimaginable.
I'm now busy with my day to day real-life. Yet it feels as if something is now missing. My serenity that I found with horses seems only a memory. Yet those memories give me the will to strive forward on a day to day basis with hopes of attaining a point of suuccess that will allow me to work with horses (hopefully mustangs) once more without loosing all that's been returned to my life; family, loved ones, and true freedom now that I'm sober.
I've come a long way and yet I still have a long road ahead of me. I give thanks to the staff of the WHIP-wild horse inmate program, to the Bureau of Land Managemet wranglers and also to the people involved with this film for helping me to find myself and dreams to strive for
Thank You!!!!!!

Hello Matt,
Thanks for replying to my e-mail. I honestly hope that all will go well for you and your life. I lost a great many things that were importnt to me when I was younger due to my own mistakes that were no one elses fault except mine, so I kind of understand what you have gone through, not to the extent of imprisonment, but life on a submarine is 7 days a week, 17 hours a day for approximately 9 1/2 to 10 months out of the year, at least on fast attack submarines actively attached to a battle group.
I absolutely love my mustang and i was being completely honest when I mentioned my feelings, my wife teased me a bit about the tears when I told her about your part in the show. I would love to see that special put on sale as a DVD for purchase with at least 75% of the proceeds going back to the WHIP program to purchase material items, saddles, lunge lines, harnesses, halters, etc... and not have to rely as much on state funding. I know that I would buy at least 2 dvd's for myself and family.
If you ever wish to e-mail directly to me, please feel free to do so at willdad2@aol.com, I think it would be great if you are able to set up a "youtube" web page and have one of your links a discussion board and tips for training your mustang/horse by an experienced trainer. I think you would have a great deal to offer those of us who are getting back into riding. You could even add a sub-section that lets other folks, as well as yourself, talk about our "bumps & bruises".
Again, I wish you the very best of luck and hope that your next opportunity to train horses will be as a paid trainer on a horse ranch (if you so desire that) and if your life does not get back to horses in the near future, I hope that yoru life will be a great one.
Sincerely,
Bill O'Leary |
