I like your big idea. When I was a kid (I'm 56) I spent a lot of time outside. We lived in a small town--and while I tended to fit in there like a glazed ham fits into a Bar Mitzvah, there were good things about it. We all did lots of skating and biking and hiking--we were just a few miles away from the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, and that was a great place to roam in.
I think people nowdays are afraid to let their kids out alone. I doubt that the crime rate is really that much higher--I think that the scary stories you see on the news cause parents to be more cautious than they need to be, and more cautious than is actually good for their children. Parents have to work so hard just to stay afloat that they have less time to take their kids out into the woods than they had years ago. Plus a lot of parents today are scared to death of being farther than a 5 minute drive from a store. Any store. Dude, the culture has *changed*! Between not knowing who to trust, trying to pry kids away from computers, thinking you need an RV in order not to die of exposure, etc., we're all in a fix.
Maybe you could start putting your big idea into effect by doing just what you're doing now--blogging. Most kids now use computers as their starting points. Do you know any good websites you could turn them on to to pique their interest? Do you live in a neighborhood where a lot of families live? Do you have a neighborhood association you could connect with? It might be a great place to start. Blessed Be and don't give up on your big idea, Sandie |
