First, I must confess: I've hated Tom Petty's music all my life. Upon hearing just the first few notes, I know it's Petty and I change the radio channel as fast as possible.

So, why would a Heartbreaker hater subject themselves to 4 uninterrupted hours of Pettyness? I'm a documentary addict, that's why. I'll watch anythhing even remotely qualifying as a doc.

Confession #2: I had no idea how smart and talented he was in music, of course, but also how gifted he is as a salesman and businessman, and how honest and kind he is.

Never before in my life has my perception of someone done such a 360. I cried at least twice, probably more. A four-hour film on someone of Petty's caliber is truly historic both for Tom personally, but also for America's musical legacy. Bless you, Peter Bogdonovich, for standing up to the suits who no doubt made your life a living hell over film length.

The artists Petty has jammed with over lo these many decades is breathtaking. The Heartbreakers' saga, starting from the very beginning and not missing a step along the way, is one of the most inspiring stories I've ever witnessed.

Will I ever buy a Tom Petty album? Probably not. But where I previously changed the channel, I'll now stop and listen, and I will respect his work and ideals forever.

I kind of know where you're coming from... I wouldn't call myself a hater, but I wasn't a big fan until seeing him in concert in 2005. I love all kinds of music and go to concerts often, but the quality of the production, performance, sound, and feel of the show were really great. I knew all the songs, they just sounded better. I'd definitely go again whenever I have a chance. Plus, I think it's always so much more interesting when you learn the background of the group and how passionate they are about music. If nothing else, I usually have a new-found respect for them.

I think Tom would cringe at former Petty Hater's note which is devoid of all that he values in his music which is his life. I don't think he really cares about the things former Petty hater does. I think he cares about the music more than the drama.

You've missed a great man, a great musician, a great songwriter (how could you not get how great it is?) and you insult this great man further with a conclusion you'll never buy anything of his after writing this drama? That isn't what Tom Petty is about and you're still clueless about him, sorry.

I find your post shallow, offensive and patronizing toward Tom and he's the exact opposite of that. Sorry, I know Petty hater is trying to be nice but Tom has plenty of fans and doesn't need a fairweather fan.

RC100, maybe you should think before you reply. Someone just admitted that the movie changed their perspective -- basically admitting they were wrong all these years. And you come down on them for other things. Wow, real smart. Look at the bigger picture. It takes a strong person to admit when their wrong and a weak one to attack someone who's vulnerable. Nicely done.

Dear Former Tom Petty Hater -- Hate's a strong word -- plus, just a thought, but if Tom Petty did a 360, he'd be back where he started from. Maybe a 190? Or at least a 90?

Just checked out the doc in question, and found it to be one of the more interesting docs I've ever seen, on any subject. I've never bought a Heartbreakers record either, but I recently got interested in Petty's music listening to his radio show on XM. The guy is hilarious. Tremendous sense of humor. I find that songwriters with a healthy sense of humor without fail write interesting, compelling songs. Petty is no exception.

I loved Petty's description of contemperary country music. He said something like, bad rock music with a fiddle. Couldn't agree with ya more, Tom. And the bit where he reads the riot act to the music biz drones makes Petty the coolest rock star on the planet in my book.

The doc about Tow Dowd is every bit as interesting, entertaining and compelling as this Tom Petty doc.

While I was never a Tom Petty Hater, I have never purchased one of his albums, tapes, CD's, (yes I am old enough to have started out with 45's and 33's). But I have always found myself singing along with anything of his that I came across on the radio. Though I gave up reading Rolling Stone some twenty-five years ago, I somehow absorbed the knowlege that he was a true orgiginal and well respected by some artists that I held in high esteme. When I heard Last DJ I found a kindred spirit. Watching this documentary was illuminating, inspiring, and endearing ...... Tom Petty is an honest man.
