First, I must confess: I've hated Tom Petty's music all my life. Upon hearing just the first few notes, I know it's Petty and I change the radio channel as fast as possible.
So, why would a Heartbreaker hater subject themselves to 4 uninterrupted hours of Pettyness? I'm a documentary addict, that's why. I'll watch anythhing even remotely qualifying as a doc.
Confession #2: I had no idea how smart and talented he was in music, of course, but also how gifted he is as a salesman and businessman, and how honest and kind he is.
Never before in my life has my perception of someone done such a 360. I cried at least twice, probably more. A four-hour film on someone of Petty's caliber is truly historic both for Tom personally, but also for America's musical legacy. Bless you, Peter Bogdonovich, for standing up to the suits who no doubt made your life a living hell over film length.
The artists Petty has jammed with over lo these many decades is breathtaking. The Heartbreakers' saga, starting from the very beginning and not missing a step along the way, is one of the most inspiring stories I've ever witnessed.
Will I ever buy a Tom Petty album? Probably not. But where I previously changed the channel, I'll now stop and listen, and I will respect his work and ideals forever.
