Ozwald is the embodiment of the masculinity of fashion. With the success of shows such as Project Runway focusing on women's wear, men in fashion are becoming more and more marginalized. Ozwald is our shining peacock mascott. He is showing Americans in particular that you can be a sexy Black MAN and not have to wear "bling" and baggy clothes. He is breaking the garrish zoot suit and Stacy Adams construct of what it is to be a dapper Black male.
American's equate fashion with "name-brand" and confuse the nature of fashion as something that is a pastime for the rich and famous. Though this may be true even in Europe, to some extent, it is a high art form, and an invaluable forum for self-expression. Ozwald shows us that it is all about the FIT. Tailoring to one's body make all the difference.
It is not just his mechanical prowess as a tailor, but more importantly the importance of being UNIQUE, and embodying CHARACTER and INDIVIDUALITY, not blind sheeping conformity, and "being safe". This does not mean you are smug, it just shows people that you are comfortable in your own skin, not afraid to step outside the box and establish an identity.
It's sad that to anounce to your male friends that you are interested in fashion onstead of sports is a crime. Either you are percieved as gay, or even worse, "metro", which has become the bunching bag stereotype for gay and straight men alike.
Race and sexuality issues aside, Ozwald, and designers such as Waraire Boswell are showing Americans how to exude sexuality and confidence but not to compromise masculinity. |

I think the change has already taken place. You're seeing actors like Don Cheadle, Laurence Fishburne, Sam Jackson and Jamie Foxx flying the Boateng flag. Even the younger actors, in interviews are expressing their comfort in wearing clothes that fit. Hell, Jay-Z's wearing suits and ties now that he's the president of Island Def Jam! I think African-American men are embacing tailored clothing. While it may take time to move folks away from the Stacy Adams style zoot suits, realize that for those that know, the tailored suit makes all the difference in the world.
I'm sorry the show's over & I trust a DVD boxed set is in the works. This was a compelling series and is a must for anyone who's starting a business, interested in the world of fashion or just what it takes to "conquer America."
