Having trouble posting.
I wanted to suggest that people not only suggest one great person, but two and tell what they would find interesting about the pairing. I think that will create broader thought and discussion like the show is doing.
Here is one from me: Can't think of specific names at the moment.
A top climber of Everest - true climber, not writer of climbing and a top wall street executive. I think it could be an interesting exploration of DRIVE and perhaps reflect for both parties why wealthy executives go after physical challenge yet many climbers seek a certain insatiable drive to earn the rewards beyond people's imagination. It is a question of Drive, but also of Satisfaction. I think I would enjoy watching such a feature in the hands of Iconoclasts capable staff.

My picks would be Salma Hayek and Rita Moreno. I would love to hear perspectives from two talented Hispanic actresses who are pioneers for their communities. What it took to break down sterotypes and reach the top of their profession - in the past and today. They could compare their views about the industry and how things have evolved, improved, or remained the same. Or how about Salma and Carlos Santana (in keeping with the show's tradition of pairing people from different industries).

Jennifer Lopez and Rita Moreno would probably be a better pairing. They are both "triple threats" they sing, dance and act. I think it would be on the same level as Alicia Keys and Ruby Dee's pairing...one generation meeting their "Elder" generation.
Other good pairings: Mos Def with Sidney Poitier, Prince with BB King, Spike Lee & Martin Scorcese, John Leguizamo & Robert DeNiro, Outkast's Andre 3000 & Prince....just love the whole Iconoclast concept!

I would love to see Grant Morrison get some air time. A seemingly unknown name except by anyone who reads comic books. Hes hands down one of the most creative and thought provoking writers in the entire literary buisness. Some claim the Matrix was nixed from ideas in one of his series. Other than that hes just pretty entertaing to listen to he Scotish, likes to drink and is seemingly half crazy. A good match up with him might be david bowie because i believe ther friends anyway. Or his talented artist of choice Frank Quietly to see how they work off eachother.
Id watch it so make it happen

| I would love to see Dr. Wayne Dyer and Chris Rock. Dr. Dyer refers to Chris Rock and his humor in some of his inspirational seminars. And Chris Rock uses blunte honesty in his humor. The dynamics of the two personalites and their out looks on life would be interesting to see together.

| That would be something! I still think Dave Chapelle and Maya Angelou was a pairing of pure magic...because they were so different and yet they learned so much from one another. It was deep...though Chris Rock and Dyer would be enlightening on a different level...it would probably be just as dramatic.

Absolutely loved, The Maya Angelou pairing with another favorite,Dave Chappelle, for the total respect that they both sensetively had for eachother, Kudos to these two great great people. Their view points connected beautifully from such different perspectives. Of course Maya, had the many years of experience and the deep rich life in the company of countless thoughtful, introspective giants. Dave is no slouch, with an obvious enriched upbringing, and a unintimidated fresh way of expressing his observations of life on many levels in many different settings with regular people! Dave shares unashamedly his need for the people aspect to step inside that spontaneous experience that we all know is just his canvas for the picture he feels a need to express, and Maya craves the solitude and silence to reach her words that she so beautifuuly shares in her poetry etc. Lovely!
Eddie vetter, and Laird Hamilton have the same longing to be connected with their spiritual side, which is a NATURAL! Eddie expresses his innermost thoughts thru his instruments, song writing, his art, and beautiful connection with his family and band! Laird has an insatiable lust to reach that connection with his spiritual side, that happens spontaneously with nature, the ocean and his great wife and kids, GO BIG!
Thsis type of representation of creativity that ICONOCLASTS brings, is so valuable to the world in so many ways...
Total enjoyment and pleasure for these synopsis, in the lives of such expressive souls! More...more, a HUGE standing ovation for the format, idea, and courage to blend people that might not otherwise be stimulated in these unique opportunity settings.

My understanding of the series was two people that were considered unlikely friends were paired to discuss each other and themselves and what draws them to each other. I like that chemistry. The episodes with Isabella Rossellini and Dean Kamen, Eddie and Laird, and Mario and Michael Stipe all have that quality. Randomly picking two people that don’t know each other may not allow for the chemistry that makes the show work as well as it does.
Having said that I would like to see Lee Iacocca and Henry Rollins. My primary reason for these two is that they are disappointed in the current state of America. Both firmly believe in the freedom of innovation, creativity, and a strong since of morality in one’s actions.

Josh Lucas, because it is through him that I found this site and became more involved in doing what I can to help the environment and spread the word, and I'd pair him with another actor/look-alike (from the previous generation as suggested in one of the posts above), namely Paul Newman...perhaps because they are so similar in so many respects.
I'd like to hear about the similarities in their views on various issues--especially on biodiesel, as I know very little about it. I'd also love to hear their suggestions on how those of us here in America, living at or below poverty level, can help in these causes without it costing all that we have to survive on.
I understand, Josh and his sister are involved in starting a fast food chain that will serve healthy meals with locally grown and organic foods at a cost that your average Joe can actually afford. I want to hear more about this, as well, and hear what Mr. Newman has to say about the various ways in which he has similarly contributed.
Most importantly, I would like to hear their opinions and thoughts on how to STOP Mountaintop Removal across the country. This is somehow more important to me than all the rest, as I live here in the Rockies, and it just KILLS me to think that any human being could commit such an abomination on the face of our Mother Earth.
These two are both highly environmentally conscious people, who both seem to possess the desire to extend environmentally conscious living to those in the lower financial brackets. I think they'd bounce off each other quite naturally, and would love to see them talk face to face. I'll bet the dynamics of the conversation would prove both fascinating and educational.

Henry Ford's Son (trying to keep his company afloat, maintain a legacy "bulwark" of the USA)
Somender Singh, National motorcycle race champion, movie star, US Patent holder on simple hand tool modification to any engine that drastically improves engine efficiency and performance simultaneously. He is literally a barefoot Indian man with an achievable answer for new and old vehicles that will significantly change the auto industry. He has been trying to get funding for continued research for some time. No response. http://www.Somender-Singh.com

Stephen Tyrone Colbert DFA - The Colbert Report
&
Dave Mustaine - Megadeth
I chose these two because they're both culturally significant in their own ways.
Mustaine is one of the four fathers of California Thrash Metal music. He's recognized by the metal community as far and away, being the most resilient figure in his genre. He's sold 50 million records and toured the world dozens of times, survived addiction and serious, nearly career ending injury. All of this is based on his sole love for what he does and determination to do it. He can also play the guitar a little. In fact, he's single handedly, so to speak, invented playing techniques which metal guitar players copy universally. AND he wrote that song Holy Wars, which is, well it's the best metal song ever written. That song is like a Sci-Fi novel, it's like an action movie.
Colbert is said to have been genetically engineered to do what he does. He's aaa-ight.

I would pick David Bowie and William Gibson. Bowie is an interesting fellow with a history of science fiction ... William Gibson writer of Necromancer ..is the perfect match for any serious discussion of the future/present.
Also I would pick Sol Ovshinsky the developer of the hydrogen fuel cell amongst other wonderful things and Ed Begley ( or Jackson Brown, Cameron Diaz, Susan Sarandon ) all well known envrionmentalists ..

In reply to the last two posts in this thread, you guys came up with some *really good* ones there. Here's how I, personally, would pair a few from both posts...
Billy Bob Thornton & George Clooney
David Bowie & Susan Sarandon - (did you know they starred together in a movie?--"The Hunger")
Cyndi Lauper & Jackson Browne
Will Smith & Cameron Diaz
Sting & Leonardo Dicaprio
Those just seem like some really excellent pairings...ah, but I'm still holding out for Josh Lucas & Paul Newman, tho Paul's already been on with Redford. If I had to change my mind on that one, I'd pair Josh Lucas with Billy Bob Thornton, I think.

Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp. I think they are both iconoclastic and individualistic. Marlon Brando changed the face of acting with his invocation of "The Method." Many of his films are classics from "A Streetcar Named Desire" to "On The Waterfront" to "Julius Caesar," "Mutiny On The Bounty," "Last Tango In Paris," and "The Godfather," to name a few. These Brando films and others left an indelible imprint on acting as a profession and on filmmaking.
Marlon Brando's life on and off of the stage and screen was that of an iconoclast and an eccentric, of sorts. He broke through societal constraints and oppressive criticism to take stands on important issues involving moral and social justice in the United States and in the world. He often did this against the odds and in the face of harsh public criticism and, in so doing, he made a positive difference in the lives of the oppressed and despairing in the world.
Marlon did not go unscathed with respect to the criticism he endured for being true to his own conscience and humanitarian principles. He was also affected by events in his personal life from growing up with a mother, however loving a mother she was, who was dependent on alcohol as well as an alcoholic and harshly critical and, by some standards, abusive father to the killing of his daughter's lover by one of his sons to the imprisonment of the son to the suicide by hanging of his beautiful, but deeply disturbed daughter. After these and other events, Marlon would never be the same again.
In 1995, the film, "Don Juan DeMarco," was released. It starred Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp. In this film, Johnny Depp proves himself a consummate actor who, by his own right, even in the glow of the greatest actor that ever lived, Marlon Brando, shone brightly. "Don Juan DeMarco" was a lovely, feel-good movie that left one with several emotions inside. Johnny Depp's performance brings to mind the exemplary performances of a young Marlon Brando. There are comparisons to be drawn between the two actors who developed a personal bond while sharing in making this film. From "Edward Scissorhands" to "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" to "Don Juan DeMarco" to "The Libertine" to "Pirates Of The Carribean," Johnny Depp has demonstrated his flair for choosing interesting and diverse characters to play just as Marlon Brando did throughout his career.
Both Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp deserve a place in "Iconoclasts" history, in my opinion. I think Robert Redford being involved in presenting such an episode of "Iconoclasts" about Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp would also be of interest. He worked with Marlon Brando in "The Chase."

Consider Deadwood Writer/Creator David Milch paired with risk-taking actor Robert Downey Jr??
Discussing their struggles with addiction and the forces that fuel their creative process.
Philosophy, existance of God...ahh the possibilites are endless.
Or David Bowie and Angelina Jolie?
Controversial and irrisistable-- This unlikey pair could discuss
Stardom, Fame, Controvery, Religion, evolving identities
Or perhaps Outrageously Creative Film Director Terry Gilliam and Installation artist Cristo?
Visual imagination, creative risk-taking and the willingness to take on challenging and provacative projects....Thoughts?
