Recently, I decided to switch to all organic foods. After reading about the higher levels of nutrition found in organic food, it seemed like an obvious thing to do. After a trip to the grocery store, I found that my grocery bill was significantly more expensive. Will I have to make this financial sacrifice every time I grocery shop? Is it really necessary for these organic products to cost so much more?

yes Organic food is expensive but more nutritious, An alternative could be fresh produce that is grown in and around your community. Farmers markets have an array of produce that is fresh and even if inorganic, hasn't traveled miles and in turn lost some of the nutritional content. you can find various farmers market near your community at http;//www.greenlineindex.com.

I try to eat primarily organic foods myself, Green Girl. I agree that it can be costly. I did a little research and found one can pay the price now or later. Parkinson's and Alzheimers Diseases have been linked, but not soley attributed to, pesticides that are used in inorganic foods. The costs to care for a patient with Alzheimers ranges from $18,000.00 to $36,000.00 a year and is on the rise. I have found that if you look in the reduced price bins, some health food stores have them, you can find great bargains. Today I found fresh, organic apsaragus for $1.26 a bundle, usually $7.80. I shop at Vitamins Plus inside Drug Emporium, that's in Texas. I am also growing my own to freeze. If you have room you'll save big and have fun at the same time. Good luck and don't let the prices scare you. We all pay sooner or later.

Organic food is awesome and supporting local farmers, free range and sustainable culture is super important. You can go a step further and go organic with your clothing too! Helping to support eco friendly clothing can have some of the same benefits as supporting organic farming as it cuts down on pesticide use and can even keep thousands of pounds of fabric out of landfills. To answer your inquiry related to the necessity of increased cost for organics, Yes, it is more costly for the farmer to produce organic foods. The lack of use of pesticides increases the loss to pests and the nonuse of fertilizers or GMO decreases the total yield. I plant three seeds in every hole, One for the bird, One for the mole and One for me. I also plant twice as much as I can eat cause worms and squirells have to eat too.

Yes, buying your organic foods at the grocery store can be expensive, however you do have alternatives.

buying at farmers markets from local farmers that are not certified can be less, most practice non-toxic methods with out the high expense of certification.
You can join a local CSA, community supported agriculture, a get a weekly subscription of seasonal foods.

I belong to a CSA and have actually found it is more affordable than people think and better quality.
The rewards are great... it feels good to support my local farmer, I have eliminated unnecessary spending by eating fresh and I have become a better cook!

Organics can be very expensive. Maybe its time to came up with alternative places to buy it.

The farm market it's one of the alternatives. However, I found that shopping for other organic products (as clothes and so forth) I'm way more successful doing it online. Maybe is time for a website to combined the small farm producers in one place, creating an opportunity for the producers to sell their products and the buyers to find more affordable alternatives.

        FYI.. check www.greenhome.com .. it’s a good start.
