How do I use this site to determine when the Autism Everyday movie will re-air? I wish there was a mechanism to click the movie title and see all the upcoming air dates. As far as I can tell, my only option is to click-through the calendar day by day and scan the entire schedule.
Does anyone know a better way? We have a young boy in the family with ASD and I would really like to see this movie, or download it, etc.
All I can get from the website is: 'This movie is not showing, but was shown this week [sometime].' Very frustrating. Thank you.

| Try contacting Autism Speaks. At the end of the show, it credited 'Autism Speaks 2006' I taped it on DVR (although 24 min. late) It was good viewing. Good Luck

| Why in heaven's name this movie isn't at least available to view on the website during Autism Awareness Month is beyond me...HBO is also running a wonderful documentary, "Autism: The Musical," and not only are they running it intermittently throughout the month, it is also available on HBO on demand. I have a newly diagnosed ASD child and am trying to get my hands on every scrap of info I can, (also trying to get my husband to watch and learn as well...) A friend with and ASD child recommended this movie and I am greatly disappointed to have tried desperately and failed to see it...

I agree. I perceive Sundance as a progressive channel/site, but to air Autism Everyday once seems to be, well, inconsiderate. They plugged it on the home page, and then aired it exactly once.
BTW, I got a brief message from Sundance staffers that it will air again 'sometime' in August. I just assumed it would run throughout April on documentary Mondays. If I learn when it will re-air, I will post a message here in this thread.
Autism: The Musical was wonderful. I am trying to understand ASD, too. My godson/nephew was recently diagnosed with ASD. His mom is pursuing a specialized carbohydrate diet, trying to restore normal GI functions, and daily behavioral therapy. One book that may be helpful to you is "Children With Starving Brains" - there seems to be a link between cognitive issues and bacterial problems / problems absorbing nutrients in the gut.
Best wishes to you. I hope you find the right path(s) to help your child toward recovery.

| Thanks!! I have been hearing alot about glutein being a possible factor in ASD kids, and having to do with aggravating their condition...I haven't investigated that avenue yet, but it's on my to do list LOL!! My son is severely lactose intolerent so we've already had to maintain a dairy free diet for him and his twin for the last 4 yrs...On top of that he is a VERY picky eater and does seem to have some GI issues, (just an easily upset stomach), so I'm kind of worried about how difficult/successful/remotely feasible such a specialized diet would be...UGH!!!

Hi. I think the special diet you have heard about is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, SCD. Some ASD kids (including my nephew/godson) do have problems with bacteria in the gut, and/or lactose and gluten intolerance. The abnormal GI function affects cognition because the brain/nervous system is starved of needed nutrients. The SCD diet is designed to remove all problem ingredients and help restore normal GI function. According to my sister-in-law, the diet is a b*tch because almost all processed foods contain wheat gluten and/or lactose, so a lot of home cooking and careful reading of food labels is required-but the SCD diet has REALLY helped my nephew. He has showed a lot of improvement over the last 6 mos. or so
A web resource for SCD is at http://pecanbread.com/. One book my SIL sent to me about the GI ASD issues is "Breaking the Vicious Cycle-Intestinal Health Through Diet" by Elaine Gottschall.
Take care. Still no sign of the Autism Everyday movie on Sundance. I check every week hoping that they might air it again before August, but so far, no dice. I just don't get it - movies like this need to be shown OFTEN. There are a lot of families affected by ASD and I think any information you can get should be provided as a public service. If I had known they would show it only ONCE in April, I would've recorded it.

| I wonder how soon you would see a difference with that diet?? My son has been eating a glutein free and of course lactose free diet for the last week or so and has been alot better, but he's also now been on his low dose of Risperdal for exactly a month, so that might have a big hand in it...We really weren't gonna go with meds, but after almost 4 yrs of horrible violent screaming fits and injury to himself and others, I was kind of worn down and at a loss, and his neurologist and pediatrician both agreed that it was the best way, at least until he was old enough to learn some self control through behavior therapy...

Hi. From what I know (through my SIL), it can take a while, about 8 weeks, sometimes more, because it takes time for all of the toxic foods to be flushed from the system and for the new foods to start rebalancing the GI tract.
I'm glad you are seeing improvements.

Sorry for the short earlier post - cat interfering with typing. My SIL is using
SCD diet
hyperbaric oxygen therapy (pure oxygen delivery helps with toxins)
Lots of GI tests.
She is also considering treatments to remove metals from his body ... chelation. But won't know about that until more of his GI stuff is resolved.
He may be on antibiotics for the GI stuff
As you know, a 24-hour-a-day process. You hang in there!

Sorry I haven't replied sooner...last couple of weeks have been crazy!! I've been sick and then last week was my BD and Mother's day too, of course LOL!!
Thanks for all the support!! We go back to the neuro day after tomorrow and I'm gonna bring up dietary change and see what she has to say...since he was so close to 4, (his BD is on teh 21st) we tried him on Lactaid to see if he could get to finally have some dairy products, but it turns out that what I thought was lactose intolerance must actually be a dairy intolerance/allergy, since the pills don't work on him, although they work great for his twin...I really feel bad for the little guy...it's always something!!

| I saw the movie and would love to buy a copy. Autism Awareness should sell this film to fundraise for Autism Research. I know I would buy a copy to show to several people in our family. I am a grandparent of an autistic child and I found the film a wonderful portrayal of all the experiences that my son and daughter-in-law have had to cope with, and it also spoke to the acceptance and love for the child.
