I have to say that I really agree with roundape. (The poster that started this).
I've moved to a small town and I am a teacher. I am going to move to a bigger, yet conservative city in the midwest as soon as I can! Not a major city, just a city that has at least 200,000 people in it.
I understand why people are suspicious of others AT FIRST. Some that are suspicious after knowing you for a while just have some type of mental issue. However, in a town of less than 1000, it's hard to get to know people and have a good time without a rumor getting started. You feel closed and sometimes just plain trapped.
If Mr. so and so had one glass of wine at so and so this may go around saying that Mr. so and so is a complete drunk.
I think it's okay and great to be in small towns if your not involved in anything politically. For instance, I think contruction, highway department, ect would be okay.
However, I think being a police officer or a school teacher, or anything very political can just be plain hard in very small towns. Everyone knows you and you have to act a certain way or everything can get screwed up. You feel like you really can't be yourself.
I'm not bashing small towns. They can be a wonderful way to raise kids and live life.
However, for some, like me and roundape and someone else, it can be much worse than living in the city.
I don't think that roundape actually meant that small town people are pothetic. However, just try taking a political position in a small town and see how weird some people can get. Some people are great though. I have meant a few people that are fairly close friends.
However, the advantages, in my case, are MUCH less than living in the city.
