The book in Ruby Dee's hand was by Alicia Keys (Tears for Water: Songbook of Poems & Lyrics) published in 2005 but whether or not the poem was from that book...I don't know b/c I haven't read the book yet. It was a very powerful reading and if anyone knows the author & title of the poem, please let us know. Thx.

I think Ruby Dee's poem that she recieted at the organization is an inspiration to those who needs to be inspired! I would love to get a copy of what she said so I can present it to some women I know in a shelter I live in. Thank you Ruby for our beginnings and for everything that stand for being as one! Thank you Alicia for want to feel more and to understand what is achievable!

Calling all Women is one of the poems Miss Dee recited when she was with Alicia Keys. It is in her book "My One Good Nerve". Hope this might be what you are looking for.

To hear here recite it go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVGNPtTNqEU
The way she dramatizes it is very stirring. In the promo for the show, she didn't say it all or they cut out some of the lines. Below is the full poem.

      TODAY IS OURS
      (Anonymous)
Today is ours; let's live it.
And love is strong; let's give it.
A song can help; let's sing it.
And peace is dear; let's bring it.
The past is gone; don't rue it.
Our work is here; let's do it.
The world is wrong; let's right it.
The battle is hard; let's fight it.
The road is rough; let's clear it.
The future vast; don't fear it.
Is faith asleep; let's wake it.
Today is ours; let's take it!

Featured in the book My One Good Nerve, By Ruby Dee. 1999. John Wiley & Sons. Page 168.

Ruby Dee and her late husband Ossie Davis used to recite this poem together, which spoke to their mission in life.
